Chargers’ Jackson arrested on DUI charge

Source: Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP)—San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving.

Jackson failed sobriety tests shortly after 2 a.m. on state Route 52 in San Diego, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. He said he didn’t know Jackson’s blood alcohol level.

Jackson was on probation for a previous DUI arrest, Highway Patrol Officer Brad Baehr said. The player was taken to the San Diego County jail and released.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he was aware of Jackson’s “off-the-field issue.”

“Obviously we’re disappointed,” Smith said. “We take these issues very seriously. Moving forward, we will monitor the situation and have no further comment.”

The bounce-back Chargers are set to rebound from another regular-season defeat.

They did Saturday when revenging an earlier loss to the Colts but eliminating them from the playoffs.

Come Sunday, they get another shot when facing the Steelers at Heinz Field.

Back in November, the Steelers defeated the visiting Chargers, 11-10.

But the Chargers feel good about their chances come Sunday. It seems like they are playing with house money after starting 4-8 and now ending up four quarters shy of their second straight AFC Championship Game.

“Resiliency is a short-term and long-term thing,” coach Norv Turner said. “It’s been a week-to-week thing. We had a tough loss to Pittsburgh. That was a tough loss. We had some plays that didn’t go our way that could have. We had some guys that had bad plays that normally don’t. When you have that, it would be easy to, when you’re struggling and having the type of season we were having at the time, point fingers or turn on each other.”

L.T. could be sidelined Sunday by ‘tough’ injury

Source: Associated Press

By Bernie Wilson

SAN DIEGO (AP)—There was the strained groin in 2004, the lingering rib injury in 2005, a jaw injury in 2006, the knee injury in last year’s playoffs and then his jammed right big toe earlier this season.

Now there’s the groin injury that’s dogging LaDainian Tomlinson to the point that he might have to sit out the San Diego Chargers’ playoff game at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The star running back isn’t sure if a week’s worth of treatment and rest is going to be enough to allow him to play.

Turner: L.T. not worse but not better, either

Source: Assocaited Press

By Bernie Wilson

SAN DIEGO (AP)—With LaDainian Tomlinson perhaps hurt worse than the team is letting on and Darren Sproles sore from all the running he did in a thrilling wild-card win, the San Diego Chargers turned their thoughts toward the weather and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense.

The Chargers finally jumped above .500 and earned a rematch against the Steelers by outlasting Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 23-17 in overtime Saturday night.

They anticipate a cold, hard-hitting divisional-round game Sunday at Pittsburgh.

Colts-Chargers ties mark for overnight rating

Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP)—The San Diego Chargers’ 23-17 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts tied the mark for the best overnight rating for a Saturday wild-card game since 1999.

The game earned an 18.3 overnight rating and a 30 share on NBC, the network said Sunday. That equaled the 2003 Atlanta-Green Bay game for the highest mark for a Saturday wild-card playoff since 1999, when the Arizona-Dallas matchup received a 20.9 rating and a 38 share.

Bolts jolt Colts, win 23-17 in OT

Source: Associated Press

By Bernie Wilson

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Darren Sproles ran off the field clutching the game ball, leaving Peyton Manning to hang his head in frustration.

The San Diego Chargers outdid Manning for the second straight January, again turning to surprise stars to spark them along in the playoffs.

Given more playing time because of LaDainian Tomlinson’s groin injury, the speedy little Sproles scooted 22 yards for the winning score 6:20 into overtime and the Chargers beat the Colts 23-17 in an AFC wild-card game Saturday night.

Just like that, a Chargers team that sneaked into the playoffs at 8-8 eliminated the NFL’s hottest team a day after Manning won his third Associated Press NFL MVP award.

Colts, Bolts meet yet again in playoffs

Source: Associated Press

By Bernie Wilson

SAN DIEGO (AP)—These guys might as well be division rivals.

Peyton Manning, voted NFL MVP for a record-tying third time, and his Indianapolis Colts face Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers for the fourth time in two seasons Saturday night.

Not only are the teams familiar with each other, they know all too well the consequences of facing off a second time—one team moves along in the playoffs and the other one goes home for the winter.

After fighting week-by-week to stay alive in the playoff chase, the Colts (12-4) and Chargers (8-8) should be acclimated to the pressure accompanying their wild-card showdown at Qualcomm Stadium.

Putting pressure on Peyton key for Bolts vs. Colts

Source: Associated Press

By Bernie Wilson

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Ron Rivera was talking about Peyton Manning with both admiration and frustration when the reality of being an NFL defensive coordinator in the playoffs caught up with him.

“I tell you, you guys are like upsetting my stomach,” Rivera said.

As defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears two seasons ago, Rivera watched the Super Bowl slip away to Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. Now he’s got to come up with a scheme to stop Manning and the streaking Colts or else the Chargers’ season will be over.

Few expected the Chargers to be here - at midseason anyway.

Before the season, everyone expected the Chargers to be preparing for a playoff game.

And they are, with the Indianapolis Colts arriving for Saturday’s wild-card playoff contest at Qualcomm Stadium.

But after the Chargers had lost five of six during one dreadful stretch, the postseason chatter got pushed to the backburner.
