Chargers Team Report – 03/05/10

Source: USA Today

Jamal Williams

The Chargers continue to make sweeping changes to their roster by releasing Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jamal Williams.

The longtime heart and soul of the team’s interior defense was let go, joining LaDainian Tomlinson as past featured players hitting the streets.

But unlike Tomlinson, there is a chance Williams could return — but that’s no guarantee.

“This is a difficult time of year and the most difficult part of our job,” general manager A.J. Smith said. “Jamal has been an anchor of our defense for 12 seasons. He’s battled courageously at one of the most punishing positions on the field, and I respect him immensely.”

Williams tore his triceps in last year’s season-opener and landed on IR, wiping out the majority of his season. But it appeared the Chargers were counting on Williams to get healthy and return to shore up a shoddy run defense.

Chargers trade Cromartie to Jets

Source: Associated Press

Antonio Cromartie

NEW YORK (AP)—It just got a lot tougher to throw against the New York Jets.

A few hours before the NFL’s free agency period began, the Jets improved their secondary in a big way by agreeing in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire talented but troubled cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Thursday night.

The Jets confirmed the deal, but didn’t release specifics—although it is believed to be for a draft pick in 2011.

Cromartie was an All-Pro in 2007 and will team with Darrelle Revis in the Jets’ secondary, making them possibly the best cornerback tandem in the NFL. Cromartie replaces Lito Sheppard, who was released earlier in the day after one disappointing season.

Jamal Williams

The Chargers released 12 year veteran defensive tackle Jamal Williams today in preparation for the start of the 2010 offseason which begins today at 9PM PST.

From Chargers.com

“This is a difficult time of year and the most difficult part of our job,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “Jamal has been an anchor of our defense for 12 seasons. He’s battled courageously at one of the most punishing positions on the field, and I respect him immensely.”

The team also released veteran running back Michael Bennett, leaving the roster thin at the running back position.

“We have a plan for the offseason,” said Smith. “It’s a long offseason and we’ll have many options. We’re confident we’ll be able to add strong depth at all positions, including running back.”

Chargers change mind on Sproles

Source: ESPN

Darren Sproles

The San Diego Chargers changed their mind and placed the first- and-third-round tender on running back Darren Sproles on Thursday, the team announced.

A week ago, the team announced that it would not tender Sproles, allowing him to become a free agent. On Thursday, they decided they couldn’t afford to lose Sproles after releasing LaDainian Tomlinson.

Sproles would earn $7.2897 million in 2010 if he signs the tender. The Chargers would have seven days to match an offer if a team tries to sign him. If it doesn’t match, San Diego would receive a first and a third-round draft choice from the team that signs him.

Chargers will non-tender Sproles

Darren Sproles

SAN DIEGO (AP)—First LaDainian Tomlinson, and now Darren Sproles.

The San Diego Chargers have decided not to tender a contract to Sproles, allowing the speedy running back to test the free agent market, a person with knowledge of the situation said Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t made an official announcement.

The move came four days after the team released Tomlinson, who ranks eighth on the all-time rushing list with 12,490 yards.
