Brees slipped to the second round of the draft, and the Chargers considered themselves fortunate to grab him with the first pick in that round.

As the backup to Doug Flutie, Brees played in just one game, rallying the Chargers from a 19-0 third-quarter deficit to a 20-19 lead at Kansas City. Brees was 15-of-27 for 221 yards and a touchdown in a game the Chargers eventually lost 25-20.
