SAN DIEGO — A day after the Chargers’ game plan stayed close to the ground, pointed questions filled the air on Monday at the team’s training facility.
The queries came at Marty Schottenheimer rapid fire as the coach met the media in the wake of his team’s 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Most carried the same central theme —- his conservative game plan in the second half that many critics feel allowed his team to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Fire away.
Why so conservative?

Martyball – or is it now Camball? – has returned.
No one is happy.
Only Keenan McCardell is really saying so publicly, which should endear him to the thousands of Chargers fans who are beside themselves over Sunday’s 16-13 loss in Baltimore and too many like it under Marty Schottenheimer.

The Chargers play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, with the Steelers coming off a bye again, same as they were last year when they came to San Diego and won 24-22.
That game against the Steelers last October began a stretch of four opponents in five games that had byes the week before playing the Chargers. That won’t happen to any team again. The league this year put a protection into its scheduling process to ensure no team would have to endure such a stretch, according to a source.

Chargers safety Terrence Kiel will plead not guilty today to five felony charges filed yesterday involving the shipment and possession of codeine-based cough syrup, his attorney said yesterday.
The San Diego County District Attorney yesterday filed two charges of transporting a controlled substance and three charges of possession for sale of a controlled substance against Kiel, who was arrested last week and is free on $160,000 bond.
Kiel’s attorney, Bob Grimes, declined to comment on the merits or facts of the case except to say the bail was set at $160,000 only because a judge didn’t yet have the opportunity to review which controlled substance was involved.

As Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer faced numerous decisions in Sunday’s contest at Baltimore, he continually turned to a philosophy that has allowed him to claim 188 NFL victories in his career.
“The success we’ve had (throughout his career) has been driven by giving the players the opportunity to do what they do best,” Schottenheimer said Monday. “I’ve always coached that way.
On Sunday, that meant minimizing risks when his offense was backed deep in their own territory and relying on a defense that after three weeks is tops in the NFL.

Run the ball, stop the run, gain field position and win the turnover battle. That simple formula generally means success on Sundays in the NFL, but despite following the criteria, the Chargers were unable to pull out their third win of the season in Baltimore.
“That’s as good a defense as we’ve seen in a while,” Schottenheimer said. “We knew that coming in. We did a lot of things extremely well, but we didn’t capitalize on a couple of opportunities and ultimately we lost the football game.”

Sure it stings. Stings bad when you dominate a team for most of a game then leave without a win.
That was the feeling the day after the Chargers lost yet another game in the fourth quarter — their first since last season. This time they fell to the Ravens. 16-13, on Steve McNair’s late touchdown pass.
The Chargers were well in control and appeared headed to a 3-0 record. But they never moved off the 13 points they put up in the first half and the result was letting the Ravens hang around and eventually win the game.
