Billy Volek arrived in San Diego on Tuesday night, went through his first Chargers practice yesterday afternoon and figured he was through with all things Tennessee.
Not so fast.
After Tuesday’s trade that sent the veteran quarterback from the Titans to the Chargers, Volek said he “got a raw deal” in Tennessee, where he was expected to be the starter this season but was demoted to No. 3 about two weeks before the opening game. Apparently that did not sit well with Jeff Fisher, his coach the past six-plus seasons.

We’ve heard a lot about Philip Rivers, but that’s to be expected with a resume like the one he has. After all, this is a man that ended his college career with the second most passing yards in NCAA history. Further, he was named MVP of five different bowl games (including the Senior Bowl). In short, during the four years Rivers started at quarterback for the North Carolina State Wolfpack, he became one of the most accomplished passers in college football history.

Once again I went 10-6, but I had a bad week. Week one there were quite a few upsets. Week two I called for some upsets that just didn’t happen. Sure, there were some upsets, but for the most part, the teams that were supposed to win, won. There were, however, a few exceptions. Did anyone call San Francisco over St. Louis? And who thought Miami, Carolina, Kansas City, or Tampa Bay would be 0-2 at this point of the season?
Let me take a look at how I fared against the “Inside the NFL” crew. Honestly, not to well. Here are our current standings.
Bob Costas 22-10
Chris Carter 21-11
Chris Collinsworth 20-12
Dan Marino 20-12
Thumper 20-12
You know things are wrong in the world when Bob Costas leads at anything. Don’t worry; even a broken watch is right twice a day. Costas won’t lead for long. Now, on to this weeks picks:

The Chargers are 2-0 but there are no cartwheels to go along with it.
Heading into the bye week undefeated never feels bad. But the Chargers are trying to keep their good vibrations to themselves, keeping what they’ve accomplished in perspective.
Bolting from the gate with two convincing wins is never a bad thing. The Chargers, though, also realize they’ve played probably two of the NFL’s worst teams in the Raiders and Titans.
And up next could be two of the NFL’s top teams.
Awaiting the Chargers the Sunday after next are the Ravens, in Baltimore. After that, the Chargers entertain the world champion Steelers, a road team with few peers of late.

SAN DIEGO —- New quarterback Billy Volek went through his first Chargers practice Wednesday with his ears burning more than his right arm.
That’s because Volek, acquired from the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday for a conditional sixth-round pick, was being blasted by his former coach in the process.
“I never at any time in my career have gone into such detail (about a trade),” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said to the Nashville media. “But I felt the responsibility, as Billy felt he was thrown under the bus. Billy threw this organization under the bus, along with a number of his teammates.”

How would you like to be Michael Turner? You’d be averaging 7.6 yards per carry this season, having outrushed LaDainian Tomlinson on Sunday. You would have averaged 5.9 yards per run last year, and 5.1 yards the year before that.
And you’d be nothing but a backup for the foreseeable future, stuck behind the great LT in San Diego.
I asked Turner how he deals with what would be a highly frustrating situation for most of us. “This is my third year in this role,” he said. “I’m over that. I’m just trying to take advantage of every opportunity I get.”

As Billy Volek stood on the sideline wearing a ball cap at Sunday’s Chargers-Titans game, a series of emotions stirred in him. He hurt for the team he gave his heart and soul to for six seasons, but at the same time began to get excited about what he might become a part of.
“It was a very interesting situation,” Volek said. “The Chargers are playing great ball right now and it’s crazy how things worked out. They’re bringing me in for some experience. Hopefully I can help out this team the best that I can. I think I bring a lot to the table.”
