Rating Dorsey

Teams are closely examining LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, who spent a lot of time undergoing tests at the hospital in Indianapolis during the scouting combine.

Dorsey is expected to be one of the top picks in the draft. It turns out Dorsey has several injuries that team doctors are concerned about and not just the tibia he fractured in 2006.

Dorsey played through the injuries and was a beast last season. But teams are worried about his right leg, back, knee and ankle.

Thus, it is looking more and more like Virginia defensive end Chris Long will be the first defensive lineman selected.

Parcells Looks Into Ryan...

I think you shouldn't make too much of this, but Bill Parcells, czar of the Dolphins, holder of the first pick in the draft, called Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski the other day and requested video of every one of quarterback Matt Ryan's 654 passes last fall. I still say Ryan at No. 3, to Atlanta, makes the most sense.

A definite possibility. They could be tipping their hand if they sign Dolphins RB Jesse Chatman (visiting today). With Chatman, Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, they’d be well stocked in the backfield.

Ryan Clady

Boise State’s Pro-Day was yesterday. There was a reportedly more than 50 NFL personnel representing 30 teams Monday at the Caven-Williams Sports Complex. Offensive tackle Ryan Clady ran the 40-yard dash in 5.18 seconds along with a 31-inch vertical jump and 9-foot broad jump. According to the Idaho Statesman, “The Carolina Panthers were well-represented. The Panthers’ general manager, head coach, offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and defensive backs coach were all in attendance. Clady had lunch with representatives of the Panthers’ organization Monday.”

Could Clady be the Panthers’ pick at #13 Overall? After hearing that, I’d bet money that Carolina will attempt to land him.

Andre Woodson has been one of the most heavily scrutinized players during the NFL Draft process. And after spending the past two months reading and hearing about how his stock has fallen, the former University of Kentucky quarterback is hoping for a strong finish leading up to the April 26-27 draft in New York City.

Woodson took a step in that direction at UK's Pro Day workout Wednesday morning. Woodson ran the 40-yard dash in a respectable 4.8 seconds despite battling a slightly pulled hamstring, and he looked sharp throwing the ball to former UK receivers Keenan Burton, Steve Johnson and Jacob Tamme as scouts from 25 NFL teams looked on.

The Bears were one of about 15 teams attending the pro-day workout of Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco on Thursday, according to agent Joe Linta. If they have any interest in Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson, they're doing a good job of disguising it. Twenty-five teams were represented at Woodson's workout Wednesday in Lexington, and a coach on hand confirmed a report in the Louisville Courier-Journal that the Bears were one of the seven absent.

Flacco's Stock Is Rising

University of Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco continues to wow NFL scouts. He followed up his solid throwing performance at last month's scouting combine with another impressive workout yesterday at Delaware's Pro Day. "He threw the ball great," said an AFC scout who attended Flacco's early-morning on-campus workout. "He's done everything right in the offseason. Everything." Has his stock risen enough to get him into the first round? "I think so," the scout said. "Right now, there's a lot of teams that have him rated ahead of [Matt] Ryan."

Gholston's vertical could help him leap into top five

Vernon Gholston's stock is soaring. How high? Precisely 42 inches.

Representatives from nearly every NFL team battled a snowstorm to view Ohio State's pro day, and the estimated 50 scouts in attendance were quickly distracted from the cold weather outside. If they had not been staggered by Gholston's speed and explosiveness based on his film, they certainly had to be when he stole the show Friday -- churning out a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and 42-inch vertical jump at 6-3, 266 pounds.

Only two defensive linemen -- Purdue's Cliff Avril (4.51) and Auburn's Quentin Groves (4.57) -- ran faster at the combine. Avril and Groves are projected as linebackers by teams. Gholston played outside linebacker early in his career with the Buckeyes and has the athleticism to return to the position in the pros, but most scouts view him as a classic pass-rushing defensive end.

That Gholston even elected to work out in Columbus came as a bit of a surprise. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year already had legitimized his stock as a top 10 prospect with a strong effort at the scouting combine in Indianapolis last month. The junior defensive end was timed at 4.67 in the 40, and topped out at 35.5 inches in the vertical jump.

In working out again for scouts, however, Gholston showed his competitive nature. In improving each of his numbers significantly, he may have jumped into top-five consideration. In fact, some scouts leaving the workout questioned if Gholston hadn't leaped ahead of Virginia's Chris Long as the top defensive end in the draft.

Long, considered by many scouts to be the safest pick in the entire class, is a better player than Gholston now, due to Long's rare technique and instincts, but scouts contend that he isn't the same caliber of athlete as Gholston. As one scout leaving the workout characterized it: "With Long, you have a finished product. Gholston is an ascending talent. In a few years, he could really be something."

Considering the talent that comes out of Columbus each year, Gholston wasn't the only Buckeye posting eye-popping numbers Friday.

Senior offensive tackle Kirk Barton also had a strong day. Characterized as a tough guy with marginal athleticism throughout his career, Barton raised eyebrows with a 4.95 40. The sub-five-second 40 was the first scouts have seen from Barton, as the four-year starter was limited at the combine due to a knee sprain suffered at the Senior Bowl.

The fastest time recorded by any offensive lineman in Indianapolis was the 4.99 by Rutgers' Jeremy Zuttah. Barton, while not running the 40 at the combine, showed impressive strength there, ranking among this year's strongest men with 34 repetitions of 225 pounds.
