I've been perusing the mock draft sites and have noticed a high number of them have been updated now that Mathews and Lewan aren't coming out. Most sites have us taking OT Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. I don't really know much about him - anybody see him play? By the way, the other names associated with Chargers at pick 11 I saw the most - Warmack OG, and Banks CB.
Only major knock against Fisher that I have heard is he did not play against elite opponents. He will be at the Senior Bowl so we should get to see how he performs there against better competition.
I did my first ever mock yesterday. I could be clueless and I could be a bad predictor cuz Fisher was gone by our 11 and all I could see to draft that was worth the 11 pick was Star.
I have a hard time believing that Fisher comes off the board with Star still on it. That said, in that case draft Star and laugh about how good our defense is for the next decade.
If I were to create a big board Star would be either 1 or 2 with Werner, and either would incredibly hard to pass on at 11. This is why free agency is so tempting, if we could land a big fish like Albert or Long we could open up our entire draft. But at this point I can't fathom not taking a LT (in particular Eric Fisher) at 11. At the same time its the era of "build by the draft...but only draft BPA!"
Exactly, if this is the scenario then I'd have absolutely no problem drafting Star. Then we'd have a front 3 of Liuget, Reyes and Star, who could be one of the league's best for the next decade. Our run D was already pretty decent, adding a blue chip NT like Star would be great. Obviously that leaves us with an issue of trying to shore up the o-line in later round or free agency, but if your guy that you want is gone and the best player available is someone like Star, you take that instead of reaching for the next guy in my opinion.
Well I have since changed the Charger to pick to a need over BPA selection in Johnathan Banks at CB. I agree I orignially projecting mostly worse case scenario for SD in the draft that Star fell to us at 11, how hard is that to ressit? IMO Fisher springboards up to top 10 picks via Senior bowl and a shortage of #2 and #3 OTs in Lewan and Mathews. I dont have my mock on me (once again) but im currently working on making my pick for Chargers at 45, and workin off the premise that we go Banks and Star falls 2 more to TB (who i had previously takin Banks). I also made my draft and aparently didnt save any of it so I had to re do it under duress. In any case this led me to make a second 1st round mock in which only 2 QBs are drafted in the first. Which now im workin on that second round and so far has been a run on QBs in the second, and shortly after that a run on the rest of the OT talent (right about 2 picks before ours) so im now lookin at Kyle Long with the consideration that in another mock im tryin to use as a insight has him goin to CHI 5 picks later. So doesnt seem like as much of a reach as it feels like (but could be) Lookin at him on nfl.com and hes listed as a OG, so maybe that is the reason for the rise. If so either way makes a great OG prospect in the second. I might have just talked myself into Kyle Long with the 2nd pick.
I will post all the mock work I got done when I can get back to a inet connect with it all. So far all the criteria I have to go with is a top 100 list, top 200 a few *weak* mocks and a top 3 team needs list. I also did my first mock based more on BPA at PON and not factoring in trade ups or FA.
Ok I did it. I managed to take digital paper and transport it from one translator to another. I like to also think this is a mock of what could happen and not nearly close to what will happen. Although some picks slot VERY well to the team that could take them at what would be/could be considered higher than value, and banking on it this year. Warmack to TENN at 10th pick for example.
Holy crap! Is it just that this is a Mock directly from Eric Fisher or what?? http://www.nexteranfl.com/2013-nfl-mock-draft-part-1/ 1. Kansas City Chiefs : Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan NextEra RAP Rating - 117.2 (LT) Big Board Ranking - #2 As you may have noticed we have had a new addition to our mock drafts, our new player evaluation system. For more information on what the numbers mean, click through to our system explanation page. The Chiefs obviously need a QB, but does Andy Reid spend the 1st overall pick on one? Geno Smith is the only one really in the discussion at this point, but selecting him would be a significant risk. Smith is a poor man’s RG3 that has more bust potential than RG3 ever did. If I was in KC’s shoes I would look to take a QB at the top of the 2nd round, where there could be some very nice value options including Matt Barkley, Mike Glennon and Tyler Wilson. Another option for Andy Reid is to trade the second round pick to Philly for Nick Foles, his former protégée. So with a QB pencilled in at the top of round 2, what do they do with the 1st overall pick? Obviously a trade down would be preferable, but that looks unlikely to happen. My pick would be Central Michigan LT Eric Fisher. If your a frequent visitor to NextEra NFL you will know we have been real high on Fisher for the past couple of weeks, and we are only getting higher on Fisher the more tape we watch. He displays exceptional lateral movement and solid technique to go along with an impressive 6-8 frame. Fisher goes a little unnoticed playing in the MAC with Central Michigan, so doesn’t get a lot of recognition nationally. Putting on the Michigan State game tape, he was absolutely terrific against William Gholston and company and despite his team getting blown out he kept playing hard to the very end. Fisher has an outstanding Senior Bowl week so far and is rising on most draft boards into top 10 contention. Whoever the QB is in KC, they will need protecting and getting Brandon Albert to slide over to right tackle or Guard would be beneficial for him as well.
Check that, this has got to be the most Hillarious mock ever: 11. San Diego Chargers: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia NextEra RAP Rating - 101.2 (WR-Slot) Big Board Ranking - #10 Part of the reason for Philip Rivers decline is he is forced to hold onto the ball, waiting for his big receivers to get open down the field. With a less than great offensive line having a “do it all” wide receivers/ running back to dump the ball off to quickly would be a great asset to the Chargers Offense. Austin is so dynamic with the ball in his hands and can quickly turn a 5 yard catch into a 50 yard play, due to his immense ability following the catch. Austin is a very similar player to Vikings’ WR Percy Harvin, without the medical concerns.
