Now that the season is officially over, time to dive into the off-season stuff.

    NFL Combine: February 22nd-25th
Free Agency Starts - March 11th
    Off-Season Workout Programs Starts - April 21st
    NFL Draft: May 8th-10th

Let's talk free agency, and where and who should the Chargers pursue for their areas of need?

I think we can use FA to supplement the draft here, for the most part it worked last year.

RB - Depth - Donald Brown, Joique Bell, James Starks
WR - Depth - Doug Baldwin, Andre Caldwell, Julian Edelman, Ted Ginn Jr, Andrew Hawkins
OT - Depth - Anthony Collins, Marshall Newhouse, Geoff Schwartz, Thomas Welch
OG - Starter - Jon Asamoah, Willie Colon, Vladimir Ducasse, John Jerry, Mike McGlynn

DL - Starter - Terrence Cody, Antonio Johnson, Paul Soliai, Randy Starks
OLB - Depth - O'Brien Schofield, Jason Worrilds
ILB - Depth - Patrick Angerer, Joe Mays, Arthur Moats, Daryl Sharpton, Wesley Woodyard
CB - Role - Tarrell Brown, Vontae Davis, Corey Graham, Walter Thurmond

I like Bell from that running back pool, not crazy about any of WRs, Asamoah would be a real upgrade.

Alex Mack or Mount Cody would be awesome.....

Would we even be able to bring Bell in and ask him to be a backup again? While I'm not the most astute of talent observers, it looked to me like he could start for a couple of teams in the league who do need a RB (Miami and Cleveland come to mind).

If I'm thinking of a back up running back, I'd consider Dixon from SF, likely to be cheaper and can handle the heavy between the tackles load. Need to find a real veteran NT - maybe Geathers or Jerideau can stand up and be NT but they need a real teacher and Soliai would be perfect. CB, between the draft and FA we could strip down and rebuild the entire corps without a problem. I'd be willing to drop every CB we have and replace them with a high draft, a damn good FA and some extra depth.
OG - It's very top heavy at the draft and very limited in FA. I'd consider keeping Rhinehart as a backup OG of all trades and I'm ready to move Troutman to start at LG, then find someone to take over the RG spot

You can't spell Knowshon without "no."

Underperformer for first 4 seasons…then has first (barely) 1,000 yard season,
just in time for him to think he deserves franchise rb money. Worst of both worlds.

    I miss football season already.

On a related note, if I was rich beyond my wildest dreams, I would pay a cool million to squat my bare *** at the 50 yard line and drop the runniest **** on the Oakland Raiders logo. Then drag my *** across the grass to the end zone until it's clean.

We'll get em next year, Bolts.

Actually, given the state of things in Oakland right now, I believe the price tag on that is just $14.99

Even though that it's a deal, I'm broke as a Carlos Mencia joke right now.

I wonder if they'll settle for a Kids Bop CD and a coupon to Sizzler.

So, played with #'s from overthecap.com, played GM as well..

    Cuts:
    Jeromey Clary - Savings - $4.6M
Nick Hardwick - Savings - $4.4M (assuming retirement)
    Le'Ron McClain - Savings - $2.5M
    Jonas Mouton - Savings - $766K
    Johnny Patrick - Savings - $700K
    Extension/Restructures:
    Antonio Gates - 2 years - $10M
    Eddie Royal - 2 years - $6M
    Philip Rivers - 5 years - $85M ($35M signing bonus)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Cap # : $21,547,970M, $16,547,970M after $ set aside for draft.

Now if Malcolm Floyd retires, his dead money hit will put a beating on our cap #. I'd rather just IR him or if he does come back, I'm fine with it. Still need to draft and sign a WR. Hopefully Gates and Royal take pay cuts to stay.

    Re-Sign:
    Donald Butler - 5 years/$30M
Chad Rinehart - 4 years/$12M (Move to Center)
    Darrell Stuckey - 3 years/$6M

    Sign:
    Andre Caldwell - 2 years/$3.5M
    Antonio Johnson - 2 years/$2.5M
    O'Brien Schofield - 3 years/$6M
    Wesley Woodyard - 2 years/$5M

    Draft:
1: CB, Michigan State, Darqueze Dennard
    2. OG, Miss. State, Gabe Jackson
    3. OLB, Boise State, Demarcus Lawrence
    4. WR, Clemson, Martavias Bryant
    5. NT, Louisiana-Tech, Justin Ellis
    6. RB, Tennessee, Rajion Neal
    7. C, Tennessee, James Stone

That would be best scenario, and very optimistic, I know.

I was going to say that we could designate Floyd as a June 1 cut but it appears that his 2014 salary is guaranteed, making that strategy useless. Fortunately cutting him before June 1 only adds a little over $1 million to our cap for 2014, so that's not a game changer.

I don't see why we'd keep both Johnson and Freeney. We save $2.5 million by cutting Johnson and $3.125 million by cutting Freeney, and if we're getting Ingram back and adding Lawrence and Schofield (and Woodyard?) I don't see how we can afford to keep Freeney and Johnson at that price.

Also, I'd try to get Gates/Royal to take pay cuts rather than giving more years and pushing cap hits into the future. If they aren't willing to accept, I'd definitely just cut bait with Royal while having a difficult discussion about Gates. Speaking of pushing cap hits into the future, how much does your plan have us saving in 2014 with the Rivers deal?

My consensus has changed since, it does pretty much everyday with this roster lol

But, I'd keep both Freeney and Johnson, yes. Both have 1 year remaining and are vet leaders. Freeney can groom Lawrence, and Schofield will most likely be a depth guy and also ST's. Woodyard plays ILB.

And Gates was restructured from 2 years $16M I believe to 2 years $10M. Royal got an extended 2 years which took his 2014 salary and stretched it over so its like a 3 year/$9M deal. He'll be lucky to get $3M/year elsewhere.

Rivers deal has us saving roughly $6M.

A source tells Profootballtalk the 2014 salary cap could be a "few million" higher than $132 million.

The cap could reportedly spike as high as $135 million, which would be a 9.75 percent increase on 2013. That would be extremely good news for a crowded free agent market, and means we could see fewer cap casualties than in recent years. The 2013 market was extremely soft, so soft that there were whispers of collusion. It appears we're going to be in for a much more active 2014.
