I am a big fan of 4-3 oppose to 3-4, if you look at the number of sacks that were made most of them had 4 or 5 on the line. I vote 4-3 this year.

We are built for the 3-4. Are you still in "hire Art Shell" smart *** mode? Or do you really think this is a good idea?

Im dead serious about this... Who cares if we were made for 3-4, we would be able to switch 4-3 just as easy and be even better.

Just because we have DT's for the 4-3 doesn't mean the rest of the defense could make the switch.

Merriman would be playing out of position as either a 4-3 OLB or DE. Yes, he could make the transition to DE, but that eliminates the unpredictability of him playing OLB without his hand on the ground. Playing DE means being picked up on every play by an OT, rather than creating schematic matchups that occasionally get a RB/TE assigned to block him.

Shaun Phillips is a classic tweener. In a 4-3, he would be reduced to a nickel/dime pass rushing specialist.

A classic 4-3, or the "Tampa-2" flavor? Do you understand the differences in size/speed requirements of those defenses? Have you noticed that both flavors favor smaller CB's, built for speed? 3-4 defenses tend to have bigger CB's, that can be physical at the LOS. Law, Samuel, Jammer, Cro, etc all are classic 3-4 using classic cover 2 (not Tampa 2) and cover 3 and 4 mixed it. SD favors cover 3, with some variations of a side playing a version of "1" (man) and the other side going 2, 3 or 4.

On to the LB's. Besides switching our best play makers to DE (Merriman, Phillips), I don't see a classic 4-3 strong side LB on the team. Someone with Leber type skills (although hopefully a better talent). Someone that can hold the point of attack vs. the run, while also covering TE's or RB's in the short zones. MLB? In the Tampa-2 4-3, you need a guy that can run because the Tampa 2 is truly just a variation that combines some elements of the classic 2, 3 and 4 zone coverages. The MLB is the key to the Tampa 2. He is responsible for the medium middle in defensive zone coverage. Kind of like a free safety, yet not as deep, but deeper than a classic drop of a MLB in a typical 2, 3 or 4. The Tampa 2 MLB must also be able to support the run, as that is one of two primary inherent weaknesses of that defensive scheme. The other weakness being a soft middle of the zone. I don't see a LB that fits the Urlacher mold on our roster. I like Wilhelm, but not as a semi safety that a Tampa 2 MLB needs to be. Wilhelm probably would initially work in a traditional 4-3 as MLB, but still, he's a step down from MLB classics like Singletary or Seau. Weakside OLB? Cooper would work in a pinch.

Safeties in a classic 4-3 are readily distinguishable between SS and FS. In the Tampa-2, the scheme tries to make them interchangeable, with both possessing speed first, and tackling ability second. Regardless of scheme, I've been an advocate for interchangeable safeties. It breeds unpredictability to the QB in pre-snap reads.

Bottom line: Switching to the 4-3 creates a glut of usuable DT's, but makes our playmakers less effective in their switch from 3-4 OLB to 4-3 DE's. A high draft choice would have to be made to find a natural DE. We don't have the LB's on the roster to properly fill the 4-3 needs, whichever flavor is implemented. We need a safety anyway, but switching to the 4-3 creates other more important needs, and bumps safety further down the acquirement agenda.

No. Minor tweaks are needed to make this 3-4 defense better. This is not the time, with recently invested high draft picks to fit the 3-4, to willy nilly change a system that is working.

The guy thinks we were switching to a 4-3 to get sacks. I don't think this is going to sink in...

It's easier to find LB's to run a 3-4 than to find 4 quality DLmen to run a 4-3.

merrimen and phillips would be DEs and williams wouldnt fit either. Igor and castillo would need to gain more weight to be a UT and NT.

you guys dont have a good secondary either so teams would pick you apart.
