SAN DIEGO - The previous week in Baltimore, the Chargers relied on Martyball -- all ground, all the time -- but it backfired. Sunday night, they tried a new tack.

"Air Rivers," linebacker Randall Godfrey called it.

Call it successful, too. With their running game stifled by a Pittsburgh defense almost as good at stopping the run as they are themselves, the Chargers put their trust in Philip Rivers and were rewarded with a 23-13 victory over the defending champs before 67,836 at Qualcomm Stadium.</blockquote>
