I mean, this guy has been making plays for us throughout the preseason. He saved the game for us last night and he had that kickoff return for a touchdown (something us chargers haven't had in ages). And yes, I know it's just the preseason but his good play is something to consider when making final roster adjustments. I believe he will make the final team, as a 4th or 5th string wide receiver/ kick returner and I hope he does well and continues to succeed. By the way, what's the deal with Vincent Brown? He hasn't been seeing that much action, why is that? Is he just not good enough? LOL. It seems Walters has been getting a lot more action, might just be me imagining things...
Brown has been dealing with a leg problem since just after the start of training camp. This is the first game he has been healty for. Norv said essentially that they would use him sparingly against Arizona for that reason. He participated in the unofficial workouts during the lockout and Norv and Rivers are impressed with what he can do. Brown should see more time in the 49'ers game on Thursday. Barring injury, I believe Walters is a lock to make the team and Brown may be the "bubble guy" that gets the last available slot or goes to the practice squad (if no one else grabs him).
Brown and Walters make the team. VJ, Malcolm, Tutu, Crayton fill out the roster. Goodman is A great return guy. If there is a choice to be made, I think I keep Goodman over Crayton because of his upside-Crayton is good, but will not get any better. Walters looks too much like Welker for him to go on the practice squad, someone will grab him because there are some receiver hungry teams out there. I'm thinking we could get a 5th rounder for him, depending on who the other teams lose to injury or disappointment.
VJ, Malcom, Crayton and Vincent Brown are locks - Goodman, Tutu and Walters are likely competing for the final spot. Crayton is a solid vet who can step up if VJ or M80 go down. Vincent Brown is a 3rd round pick and prior to his unfortunate injury the team was very impressed with him. I don't see the Chargers letting either go at all. Goodman, Tutu and Walters.... tough choice. I could see the Bolts making room to keep 2 MAYBE but they would have to give up someone somewhere else (likely at RB). Any of the 3 would be good to keep, maybe you try and float the odd man out to the PS, in that case I'd think it'd be Goodman (is he eligible?). Tough decisions, glad I don't have to make 'em
I meant keep Walters and Brown and retain Goodman over Crayton. I just didn't make that clear. Goodman and Walters's performance on special gives them an edge for me.
Looks like Wes Welker might earn two roster spots this year.....one for him, and one for Bryan Walters.
VJ, Floyd, Crayton, Brown, Walters. There you have it. Acee said on twitter yesterday that he would likely take the spot of Kelley Washington, (Walters I mean.)
Let me second that. I just don't get why people are so luke warm on Crayton. When he got the chance he came up big for us last season. He had great hands. He made clutch catches. He turned 7 yard catches into 15 yard catch and runs in traffic. Bottom line is that he produced reliably and occasionally explosively. "Upside" is a luxury at best and a wild goose chase at worst. Dropping Crayton for "upside" is a fan's move, not a NFL coaches move. Mark my words, by the time we're late in the season, Crayton will be a fan favorite.
VJ, Floyd, Crayton, Brown, Tutu, Walters in, Goodman can go to the PS and not be taken by another team
They will probably do that if they don't keep six, which Acee has speculated about before, but he won't last there. There are a number of teams who are thin at WR and Goodman has shown some real speed and some return skills.
I like Goodman simply because he is so damned fast, and he's not some straight line RPG like Heyward-Bey. I have nothing against Crayton, he's a good receiver, but I think Vincent Brown will do the same things he does very shortly. Walters and Brown are both excellent pattern runners who play faster than they time and have good hands. This is a tough choice, and the coaches have a better read than I do. We'll see what happens. Tolzien should be safe enough on the PS for us to keep six WR's. I have to wonder if Crayton can get us an ILB. Cooper can't go into the season the way he is.
