After Bears running back Cedric Benson’s first arrest last month in Texas, coach Lovie Smith declared that Benson is still the starter.

He isn’t any more.

The Bears have released Benson. (Technically, he has been placed on waivers, since he has less than four years of NFL service.)
“Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate,” General Manager Jerry Angelo said in a team-issued release. “As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of ‘team’ will not play for the Chicago Bears.”

Benson was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft, which now features four busts of Biblical proportion among the top ten selections: Benson; Pacman Jones (No. 6); Troy Williamson (No. 7); and Mike Williams (No. 10).

Some league insiders believed that the Bears would keep Benson around because his salary is relatively low and because running backs tend to get hurt.

The move could prompt the Bears to try to sign an available veteran, such as Shaun Alexander or Travis Henry.

It’ll be interesting to see whether anyone claims Benson on waivers. Somehow, we see the Buccaneers or the Cowboys in Benson’s future.

The Bears really screwed up by letting whatshisname go. I watched ONE Bears game last year (take a wild guess which) and I could tell Benson = teh suck.
