I would've done the same thing, listened to Jake. Why the heck wouldn't I put my ace on hte mound in THE big game of the year?

Should we be scared that our ace gives up 8 runs in 4 innings in THE biggest game of the year?

Why use Jake on 3 day's rest? :icon_huh:

BTW, when did the Padres sign Tomco?

Padres sign Brett Tomko, recall Clay Hensley from minors

    <HR width="100%" noShade SIZE=1>
    Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Seeking a possible fifth starter, the San Diego Padres signed veteran right-hander Brett Tomko on Tuesday.

Tomko went 2-11 with a 5.80 ERA in 33 games, including 15 starts, for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club designated him for assignment on Aug. 24 to make room in the rotation for David Wells.

The Padres don't need a fifth starter until Sept. 15 against San Francisco. Tomko will be considered for the assignment, but manager Bud Black said he'll use Tomko primarily in relief.

"He can fulfill a lot of different roles," Black said. "He has a resilient arm. I think he can help us."

San Diego also recalled right-hander Clay Hensley from Triple-A Portland. Hensley is 2-3 with a 6.43 ERA in 12 games, including nine starts, with San Diego this season.

Nah, I'm not scared, just pissed. I thought it was a bad idea to start him on 3 days rest. He's done it exactly once in his career. Why mess with a formula that was working so good. Now they have sole possession of first place and momentum knowing they beat our ace.

Let them get overconfident cuz they beat our ace on 3 days rest.

I hope that bites them in the *** if/when they face him again in the playoffs.

If memory serves, that turned out well...this time it didn't. I'm not gonna b1tch and moan because it didn't, the Pads're still in great shape to win the division; THAT'S what I'll hang my hat on.

But feel free to continue whining.

Should the D-Backs be lucky enough to get into the playoffs with that offense they will get swept right out of the playoffs as well.

Pads will win the division. :bolt:

I absolutely will. It was a bad decision that backfired horribly. While I'm a Padre fan, it doesn't mean they don't deserve to be criticized for dumb decisions.

Here is why you DON'T listen to Jake...

    1. Jake is the ace on the staff. He should get the ball every five days regardless of rotation, days off etc. (unelss it falls on the day off). If Maddux, or any other starter needs to skip a day because Jake is on his fifth day then sobeit...

    2. The above does not happen on this team...We cycle through our rotation and Jake generally gets the ball after four starter in front of him have thrown and sometimes put him on a 6-7 day hitch with days off accounted for etc.

    3. How about working up to it...Lets get into a habit of getting him the ball every fifth day, then work up to four then three...

#2 fixed to be more accurate.

I like the thinking outside the box thing, though.

    It would be an improvement.

Bud Black is another Bruce Bochy....Can't figure out how to handle a Pitching staff.

    Kevin Towers? :icon_rofl:

Sign's Tomko to "try and bolster" the pitching staff? :icon_rofl:
Made a trade for Brian Giles. :icon_huh:
    Signed Marcus Giles.

    Should I continue?

OK... I'll give him credit for getting AG and Milton.

Traded Eaton and Aki for Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez (both locked up till 2011 now)
Traded Doug Mirabelli for Josh Bard and Cla Meredith
Traded a AAA reliever for Milton Bradley
Traded X Nady for Mike Cameron
    Signed Greg Maddux

    Should I continue?

    Every GM makes bad moves.

The fact that you're regulated to pointing at a September mop-up duty relief pitcher for league minimum as one of his "bad moves" says something.

Ok, I'll discredit him for trading Jason Bay for Brian Giles. As Good and under appreciated as Giles has been in San Diego, I'd still take Bay over him.

You should have showed the rest of my post where I gave credit for AG and Milt.

Wasn't I the one that brought up Giles for Bay and Oliver in previous anti-Towers posts?

Tomko was a bad move.

Maddux wanted to be a Padre long before this season. Where was Towers?

    Etc. Etc.

You're wrong...Johan Santan gets the ball every fifth day...Maddux and Smoltz got the ball every fifth day in their prime...

3, 4 and 5 starters have always adjusted to the horses on staffs...I wrote about this weeks ago and mentioned that Nevin had mentioned it as well...He was quite surprised that Peavy and Young, when healthy didn't get the ball every 5 days repsectively. It is actually a lot more common then you think!

In the end, it gets your starter an extra start or two by the end of the season.

The problem is, you posted it in the context of an afterthought, which is a slap in the face, really.

    Yeah? what's your point?

He's brought in for mop up duty for a one month period for league minimum. I hardly think the move, however good or bad it may or may not be, really carries much weight.

Trying to sign Greg Maddux who chose to sign elsewhere.

I think the chronicles of such are well documented.

Brian Giles is a key contributer to the Padres 2 straight division titles, and a possible 3rd.

So even the worst trade on Towers' record (which I really don't label it the worst...but it does favor the Pirates) helped contribute to this team's success.

The Adrian/Chris Young trade alone far overshadows your other two examples combined.

Not happy with the decision, but it is what it is.

The last time I remember the 3 days decision to pitch the Ace in a critical situation was when they put Brown on the mound vs the Yankees. He got shelled.

    Different Manager, same results.

Yet both (Jake and Johan) have 29 starts a piece. :icon_huh:

Not necessarily saying you're wrong, but if the Twins do start Johan every 5 days it obviously doesn't really amount to much in the end.

FWIW I do agree with you, I just wasn't aware of anyone actually doing that.

Jake's pitched on 3 days rest before the other night.

9/26/04 (after having pitched on 9/22/04)

Ironically enough, also against Arizona and also after having beat the Dodgers.

    Kevin Towers, yes

Bud Black, I don't think he's been horrible, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he's done a real good job. He's made some poor mistakes IMHO. (Although I'm willing to give him some leeway being it's his first year as a major league manager.)

But that's all well beyond the point and rather irrelevant to the hilarity of you, being an average joe, claiming that you'd do a better job if given the reigns.

It was a good laugh, I needed it.
