Chargers sign cornerback Crezdon Butler, release defensive tackle Drake Nevis

Tuesday marks an off day on the schedule for the San Diego Chargers, but the front office remained busy, signing cornerback Crezdon Butler. In a corresponding move, the team released defensive lineman Drake Nevis[IMG].

Originally a fifth round selection (164th overall) out of Clemson by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010, Butler has spent time in the Steel City as well as with the Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, and most recently, the Buffalo Bills. He played in six games in 2012 for the Bills, primarily on special teams. He had one defensive tackle and two special teams stops. This preseason, he appeared in three games with one start, totaling five tackles, five passes defensed and one interception.

The 6-1, 191-pounder has appeared in 13 games during his first three years in the NFL. He missed the majority of the 2011 season after dislocating his ankle, and then was forced to miss some time last year as well due to a hamstring injury.

Butler played collegiately at Clemson alongside fellow Chargers defensive back, Marcus Gilchrist[IMG]. A three-year starter, he was a key member of a defense that ranked in the top 15 in the country in pass defense each year. Butler is tied for second in school history with 243 career interception return yards. He made 40 consecutive starts for the Tigers, the second-longest streak in school history for a cornerback.

This move doesn't fill me with great expectations of a defensive turn around...

I know, why can't they sign Richard Sherman as a FA?

Too bad about Nevis, thought he could fit in, but with Wynn's solid performances, CB is more important. Lissemore looks like he'll play all over the line once he gets into the swing of things, if he hasn't already.

What this tells me is there content with having Gilchrist at SS. Don't like that.

I saw Acee say he thought they'd sign this guy Sept 1 or something... but until yesterday I never heard of this guy and a supposed connection to the Bolts. It's amazing that CBs can be with the team all thru training camp and get cut on last cut day and when we go looking for CB help we find a guy who has never been here before. I wonder how the likes of Greg Gatson feel about this. A guy who has been here 2 yrs, knows the scheme etc.

Well, Greg Gatson was a project. 5'11 130 pound corner. Very little muscle to his frame, and also undrafted.

Crezdon Butler was a dominant corner in college. He was projected to be a 1st round pick before his senior season, but opponents only threw his way 14 times the whole year. He wasn't tested and weak stats didn't help his stock in the upcoming draft.

He has good size, nearly 6'1, 190 pounds as well.

He's been with Whisenhunt in Arizona before, and was former teammates at Clemson with Gilchrist.

Hmmmmmmm I feel for Butler, joins the team on a thursday (or this week anyway) and is the guy in the crosshairs Sunday when his team lose. Not all his fault though not by a long shot.

He looked dreadful getting beat on that TD pass. He was turned, looking the wrong way and didn't even see the ball. Wonder if he'll be on the roster for the next game?
