Crosby's "hippo" is still in the news .....

Vikings linebacker Ben Leber spent his first four seasons in San Diego and still owns a house there. It wasn't threatened by the fires, but it did serve as a temporary residence for some neighbors.

"As far as I know, everybody's back in their homes and safe," Leber said. "As far as the people and neighborhoods that I know, the fires are contained."

Leber's fellow linebacker Heath Farwell owns a house in Poway, about 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.

"My neighbors called me and said pack up your stuff," he said. "My sister lives in San Diego, so I had her run by and grab some stuff for me. I think it's pretty well contained. It's safe now, but there were five or six days where we were on edge. There's ashes everywhere, I guess."

Bottom line, Leber said, he's just glad everyone he knows made it through the fires OK.

He hasn't talked to any of his former teammates this week, but he has heard at least one funny story.

"I guess not funny," he said, "but one of our coaches (special team's coach Steve Crosby) had a hippo in his pool from a water park when he got back to his house. And just knowing the coach, it couldn't be more fitting, so I kind of laughed about that one."

OLB Shaun Phillips (groin) missed another practice but did some running on the side. His availability will probably be a game-time decision. "I'll try to cut on it (today),'' Phillips said. The only two Chargers not practicing during the first half-hour of today's workout were C Nick Hardwick and WR Buster Davis. The Chargers already have ruled Hardwick out of Sunday's game at Minnesota and even though Davis was listed as questionable, it would be shocking to see him active Sunday. Three defensive starters who missed practice time earlier this week -- ILB Matt Wilhelm, OLB Shaun Phillips and CB Quentin Jammer -- all were working today. The Chargers said Phillips was limited in his practice time and wouldn't decide his status until shortly before the game. He's listed as questionable but sounded hopeful, saying "So far, so good.'' Wilhelm and Jammer are probable.

Minnesota is having its own injury problems. CB Antoine Winfield was not on the field during the portion of practice open to Twin Cities reporters and it appears he could miss the game with a hamstring injury. The Vikings rank last in the league in pass defense with Winfield, and he's their best cornerback. Also, WR Bobby Wade, the Vikes' leading receiver, practiced for the first time this week but it's unknown whether he will play due to a hyperextended knee. The other starting WR, Troy Williamson, missed his third straight practice due to the death of his grandmother. Minnesota's top backups are rookie Sidney Rice and veteran Robert Ferguson. All three have been listed as -- what else? -- questionable. Look for Tarvaris Jackson to start at QB for Minnesota.

Williamson on family leave - Minny Star-Trib

Troy Williamson was listed as questionable on the Vikings injury report Friday, but the receiver's agent said his client won't be with the team Sunday against San Diego because of family issues.

Winfield decision to come Sunday - Minny Star-Trib

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield sat out a second consecutive day of practice Friday because of a strained hamstring and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game vs. San Diego.

The nine-year veteran will continue to receive treatment today and doesn't expect a decision on his status to be made until Sunday morning. Although the Vikings are ranked last in the NFL in pass defense and can ill afford to lose Winfield, it would not be surprising if they err on the side of caution.

If Winfield can't go, rookie Marcus McCauley will start at left corner. McCauley got the reps there Thursday and Friday. Charles Gordon, who replaced McCauley as the nickelback Sunday, will continue to play inside in passing situations.

Chargers receiver Chris Chambers, for one, is hoping to see Winfield on the field. "I wish he would play," Chambers said. "I played against him a lot when he was at Buffalo and I was pretty much looking forward to playing against him, to tell you the truth. I feel like I know a couple of his tendencies pretty good, and every time I played those guys I always had pretty good games. But I guess that would make them a little bit weaker if he's not out there."

Receivers Bobby Wade and Troy Williamson are also questionable for the game. Wade has a knee injury and Williamson has been out all week following the death of his grandmother.

Wade has been the slot receiver all season long. If he cannot play, rookie Aundrae Allison could get his first work on offense. Sidney Rice and Robert Ferguson may also rotate through that position.

Right tackle Ryan Cook (shoulder), defensive end Erasmus James (shoulder), safety Dwight Smith (hamstring), defensive end Brian Robison (illness) and special teamer Vinny Ciurciu (ankle) all were listed as probable.

Turner voted Week 8 Motorola NFL Coach of the Week - NFL.com

Voters have chosen Norv Turner of the San Diego Chargers as the Motorola NFL Coach of the Week for games played Oct. 28-29.

Turner brought the team into a tie for first place in the AFC West with a 35–10 win over the Houston Texans. Turner kept the 4-3 Bolts focused following the devastating fires that ravaged Southern California, taking the team on a three-day midweek sabbatical in Arizona for practice. Turner directed an efficient Philip Rivers, who completed 7 of 11 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers defense collected two more touchdowns, as CB Antonio Cromartie recovered a botched snap in the end zone and also returned an interception 70 yards for a score. The defense also created five turnovers, including four interceptions, to limit the Texans to only one touchdown and one field goal. With the win, the Chargers posted a 3-0 mark for the month of October.

"So far, so good," said Phillips, who indicated that it will be a game-time decision on whether or not he plays. Coach Norv Turner agreed and said Carlos Polk and Marques Harris will share time at the position if Phillips can't play. ... WR Malcom Floyd was inactive last Sunday against Houston and could be inactive again against Minnesota. "It is not a reflection on Malcom," Turner said. Our kickoff coverage is so good, and the reason it's good is we've kept an extra guys up and playing on (special) teams. We're making the sacrifice at the receiver position right now to help our special teams." ...

Couple more things about Brees. It was mentioned down below that maybe he was "throwing too hard." What kind of stupidity is that? Whoever said that got it from the Bozo announcers of the game. I guess Favre, Elway and Marino all "threw too hard." If you are an NFL WR, you MUST catch anything you can get your hands on. Brees looked poised and confident, even in the face of an OL that couldn't block anyone. He knows the offense, and did the best. Even with the OL mistakes, a few catches by Caldwell, and a non call on that punt return penalty late in the game, and the Bolts would have been right in the mix.

At the time of that post, the UT had a Quarterbacks sub-section header that was one of those that appeared above the main thread discussion. That is what is meant by "down below" - ie, referencing a thread where someone said Brees was throwing too hard.

Norv Turner made it clear early in the week he did not expect center Nick Hardwick to play Sunday against the Colts, but he did expect he might test his ankle in practice. Instead, Hardwick remained in a protective boot and only did work on the side. Injured Oct. 16 against Oakland, he has not played since.

Quentin Jammer, who aggravated a hamstring injury Sunday at Minnesota, also worked on the side.

Those were the only two players to sit out.

The playing field at Qualcomm Stadium was partially flooded by a broken sprinkler valve overnight Tuesday and the affected portion will be resodded this morning.
Stadium officials said the playing surface will be safe to run and cut on by Sunday.

“We were very lucky it happened (yesterday) morning and not Sunday morning,” stadium manager Erik Stover said.

The affected area was from approximately the 35-yard line on the west end of the field to the 45 on the east end, mainly between the hash marks. Dry soil was brought in yesterday, and Stover said about 2,000 square feet of sod will be put down today.

The Chargers will wear their powder blue alternate jerseys Sunday for the second and final time this season. They have won four straight in powder blue since dropping a 2005 Monday night game to Pittsburgh. That loss also was San Diego's lone setback in its past five home night games.

So what’s there to like about Philip Rivers, anyway? All I see is negatives: an ugly release point and sloppy mechanics, happy feet in the pocket, quick to ire when things fall apart around him. From time to time Rivers will post decent stats because he’s got two elite playmakers on his offense, but there’s no doubt in my mind the Chargers made a gross error when they jettisoned Drew Brees and got invested in Rivers. And when you can’t get it done against the leaky Minnesota secondary, as Rivers couldn’t this week, that’s a giant red flag.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie has given Charger fans plenty to cheer about lately, and fans might see even more of the talented second-year player Sunday when the Chargers host the Colts.

Cornerback Quentin Jammer missed his second-consecutive practice while nursing a hamstring and could miss a game for the first time since his rookie season. If so, that would give Cromartie the first start of his career.

Team officials collected Cromartie’s shoes, gloves and jersey that he wore during Sunday’s Vikings games and placed them in a display case in the lobby at Chargers Park. They’re commemorated along with the ball from Cromartie’s 109-yard return of a missed field goal, the longest play in NFL history.

One interesting note about the items, the ball used in the return is not one of the “K” balls the NFL uses on kicks and punts, meaning a regular ball was used on Ryan Longwell’s 57-yard attempt.

Colts-at-Chargers is an interesting game in its own right. Before the season, many expected this to be a possible preview of the AFC championship game. In reality, it gives the Chargers a platform to state the case that they really are among the league's three or four most talented teams, regardless of the Norv Turner Drag Effect.

And NBC hopes the Colts can continue to reel in big viewership numbers, regardless of the Chargers Drag Effect.

Chargers coach Norv Turner pointed out that it wasn't only Castillo's absence that hurt the run defense.

Outside linebacker Shaun Phillips missed the game with a groin injury and cornerback Quentin Jammer re-injured his hamstring early in the contest.

Playing a man short at all three defensive areas ---- the line, linebacker and the secondary ---- was too much to overcome during a second half in which the Chargers had difficulty tackling Peterson.

"People talk about the tackling and the different things that happened in that second half, but obviously Shaun Phillips didn't play at all, and Jammer is one of our bigger tacklers and Luis was having a heck of a game," Turner said. "Every time you miss a guy, someone has to step up."

Four starters who had sat out practice because of injuries the previous two days returned Friday, but with the Indianapolis Colts facing Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson at San Diego on Sunday, a pair of linebackers were of particular concern.

Freddy Keiaho (ear) and Tyjuan Hagler (neck) were limited practice participants for the third consecutive day. Both are listed as questionable for Sunday's game, meaning there is a 50-50 chance they will play.

"It's probably going to be game-day (decision)," coach Tony Dungy said. "They've taken part in a lot of the individual work, not any of the team work, but if they're cleared to go on Sunday, we'll let them go."

Both Keiaho and Hagler can play the weak side, so if either is cleared, the Colts would have a proven player there along with Gary Brackett in the middle and Rocky Boiman on the strong side. If neither Keiaho nor Hagler can go, rookie Clint Session probably would get not only his first start but his first extensive playing time.

Back at practice after two days on the sideline were defensive tackle Raheem Brock (neck), tight end Dallas Clark (concussion), cornerback Marlin Jackson (foot) and left tackle Tony Ugoh (neck). Brock and Jackson were full participants. Clark's and Ugoh's involvement was limited.
Jackson said he expects to play.

Pro Bowl wide receiver Marvin Harrison (knee) was a limited participant for the third consecutive day. He has missed three of the past four games. If Harrison doesn't play, the Colts would have only three wide receivers, Reggie Wayne, Aaron Moorehead and Craphonso Thorpe, making Clark's status even more crucial.

Not much of note, but Overin sucks at analysis .... one nugget.

As it is, despite missing two games and part of another, Wilhelm is just one tackle shy of having the second most stops on the team. In my book, that makes it reasonable to conclude that this is an aspect of defensive play that's likely to become increasingly stable.

The Colts are ticked they lost, and hopefully they'll take out their frustrations on Kansas City next week. Tennessee lost too, and maybe they can get on the right track by blasting the Denver Donkeys.

Antonio Cromartie's first career start was a memorable one.

Subbing for injured Quentin Jammer, Cromartie intercepted three of Peyton Manning's passes in the first half.

"This being my first start, I think he was trying to come after me," said the second-year pro, a first-round draft pick from Florida State. "But I just tried to hold my own."

Cromartie leads the team with six interceptions -- all in the past four games. His trio of picks Sunday tied a team record. It's been done 11 times.

Chargers Hear Boos

The crowd booed when the big screen showed Philip Rivers on the sidelines in the final minutes. It also voiced its displeasure as the offense sputtered in the second half.

LaDainian Tomlinson, who scored the offense's only touchdown on a 4-yard run after one of Cromartie's interceptions, had a sub-par, 76-yard rushing night, to go with Rivers' puny 30.6 passer's rating, two interceptions and fumble.

"I heard them," Tomlinson said of the boos. "Our fans pay money and have the right to voice their opinion. They let us know how they felt, and I certainly was not mad about it."
