I just read on Twitter that we claimed Johnny Patrick CB from New Orleans. I did this from my phone, so if someone could grab a link to confirm.....That would be great.

Chargers claim Johnny Patrick off waivers

Posted by Josh Alper on February 20, 2013, 5:08 PM EST

The Saints cut bait on cornerback Johnny Patrick less than two years after they made him a third-round pick, but the NFL waiver wire has once again shown that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Or at least another man’s opportunity to take a look at a 24-year old player deemed worthy of an early-round draft pick in the recent past.

The Chargers put in a successful waiver claim for Patrick on Wednesday and he is now part of their 90-man roster. It’s not a great sign for Patrick that he wasn’t able to keep a job with the Saints’ oft-toasted secondary despite an inexpensive $550,000 salary, but there have been other players to flop in their first stop and then find a role with another team down the line.

Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer are each set to become free agents in San Diego, leaving the Chargers with Marcus Gilchrist and Shareece Wright as experienced corners in their system. If both Cason and Jammer leave the team, Patrick could work himself into the mix when offseason work gets underway.

Why do I suddenly feel like our CB situation
must be even worse than I thought it was?

Move tells me 2 things This tells us they trust what they see in Gilchrist and Wright and Patrick will man the nickel, This is just more depth/ camp body (move along nothing to see here) Im going with the Latter.

All I know is this better not be the biggest FA move TT boy makes

    JP in da hoos!
Okay really, this is NOT news.
Camp body. Cason should get a meeting w the new fellas and
hopefully will re-sign. He's actually improved quite a bit.
Wright was supposedly starter material until his injury in preseason.
Jammer is likely gone, Gilchrist is serviceable.

Oh offseason, how dare you toy with me...

All this means is that this waiver wonder is better than the 4th or 5th best CB on our roster. If he's better than that, great. If not, he costs us nothing. The kid is young and the Saints gave up on him quick. Clearly Telesco liked this kid coming out of college and trusts his pre-draft evaluation enough to give the kid a shot.

Am I wrong or is this the first offseason move that is player related that San Diego has made?

Guy ran a 4.6 at the combine. A quote i heard today that i really liked "U can hide slow players at just about any position. It's hard to hide a slow corner."

And why do i think he's probably not coming back? Oh yeah thats why....;)

EDIT: Unless he's back as a SS, which IMO is actually possible and very interesting to me, since he loves to hit, knows how to cover, is incredibly smart and would keep our secondary together, is already close to the weight that would allow him to do so, and would give us a buffer for Brandon Taylor.

My point was that Jammer has been slow for years now, not just last season. The difference, is that Jammer is a smart experienced CB....... Patrick is a young guy who couldn't crack the lineup.

There's also, as you said, a difference between a season vet slowing down, and a guy who's just flat out slow. You can see guys like Trufant, Rodgers, Jammer have some success because they've been able to use their instincts, and recognition to cover up their speed.

But Jammer is now slow enough to be a liability against speed receivers. Now, if they let him play like they did in the Super Bowl (i.e. grabbing and holding), then he'd still have a shot at keeping his spot. ;)

Pretty much. Most Saints fans (and my wife and her family are some, so I've got access to plenty) haven't had much positive to say about him. But he's young and the Saints had squat for pass-rush and were implementing a scheme that played their players out of ideal fit (i.e. dropping Roman Harper into deep coverage and blitzing Malcolm Jenkins), so there may still be hope.

I'll be honest, he was never a guy I had pegged as being starter material even when he was just a prospect. But he has depth and ST potential. Who knows? Darius Butler was absolute crap on the Pats but shined when he was picked up by the Colts.

And Ninkovich didn't do much with the Saints either time, but Belichick managed to get something out of him.
