Here's a list of Chargers free agents I culled together from various sites. I don't know if it's 100% accurate, so feel free to add or subtract names from the list. As you can see, there's a lot besides the O-line for the new GM to consider....... 2013 Chargers Free Agents RB - Jackie BattleRB - Curtis BrinkleyRB - Ronnie BrownWR - Danario Alexander (RFA)WR - Richard GoodmanWR - Michael SpurlockTE - Dante RosarioPK - Nick NovakOG - Brandon DombrowskiOG - Tyronne GreenOG - Rex HadnotOG - Luis VasquezLS - Mike WindtNT - Aubrayo FranklinDE - Vaughan MartinLB - Gary GuytonLB - Demorrio WilliamsOLB - Antwan BarnesOLB - Shaun PhillipsCB - Chris CarrCB - Antoine CasonCB - Quentin JammerSS - Corey Lynch
Plz resign Alexander, Spurlock, Novak, Vasquez, Windt, Martin, Phillips, and Lynch. The rest can kick rocks.
Holy crap! Once you get past the scary number of names (ack!) it becomes clear that there's only a few essential cogs here. Mr. Goodman, it appears that Mr. Spurlock just bought you a Greyhound ticket to 1 Arrowhead Drive.

I'm curious why some people want to keep Dombrowski around. What has he shown, other than being a traffic cone to speed rushers? Do you see him as moving inside to guard, or what? The guy hasn't impressed me at all.
He's been here, he can play guard too, and did at times. Way more fit at LG/RG. And if you need an emergency tackle he can swing there, not saying he's great, but he's versatile.
Why does everyone say to give Alexander a 1st round tender? I say give him a 2nd, which will be much cheaper ($800k). If someone signs him, we either match or walk away with a 2nd for a guy we signed off the street. Signing him to a 1st is saying you don't want anyone to sign him because there is no chance in hell any team is going to give up a 1st for him. I am not saying I want him gone, but I would rather have a 2nd and $2.8m in cap space, than Alexander and $2.8mil less cap space.
And yet, I see people saying to let Martin go because Reyes looks good. Isn't a serious lack of depth one of the biggest problems this team has had? We still need a rotation for the D-line, don't we?
I get where you're coming from, but he's basically a 24 year old number 1 receiver. I don't think it's wise to let him just walk away for a 2nd. The fact that we got him for nothing is irrelevant. Also, as far as his cap space, who are we going to sign for 2.8 mil who will be a bigger contributor? In 10 games (6 starts) he haad 37 receptions for 658 yards and 7 TDs, and that was with our abominable o-line during the "hard" part of our schedule. What surprises me are the people willing to ditch Rosario while keeping McMichael. I mean, if you want to ditch both I can see that, but keeping MM over Rosario seems silly to me. I don't think that any of our FA RBs are worth so much as a camp invite, and would like to see Vaughn Martin retained because he is exactly the kind of player that this team has been letting walk to our downfall. We take these raw players with lots of talent, develop them, and then let them book to other teams. Martin isn't likely to see the field as a starter at DE, but it's a long season, and our defense is going to be on the field a lot next year I imagine. Having an experienced player who can come in and relieve Liuget or Reyes is going to be very valuable to us. If he isn't asking for the bank, that's a good investment.
I didn't say let him walk, we will have the choice to match the contract if he is signed by anyone. If someone signs him to a ridiculous contract, I would MUCH rather let him walk for a 2nd this year, than let him walk for nothing next year. We did that with AJ by refusing to accept less in trade for him, and would be stupid to do so with a dude who came off the street, with major knee issues, when we could potentially get a 2nd round pick. By the way, we get VB back next year. I think we will be fine even if he walks, especially since we would be able to address a bigger need with that 2nd round pick. And if someone signs him to a decent contract, match it and call it a day.
RB - Jackie Battle > don't care either way RB - Curtis Brinkley > same, don't mind if he goes RB - Ronnie Brown > to be honest, considering Mathews lack of production I feel we need a better #2 RB WR - Danario Alexander (RFA) > hopefully stays WR - Richard Goodman > OUT WR - Michael Spurlock > hope he stays too, good at returns and not bad #4 WR TE - Dante Rosario > not that bothered, i'd like to see Green develop and get more time PK - Nick Novak > think he did well, so hope he stays OG - Brandon Dombrowski > If he comes cheap, might as well OG - Tyronne Green > Disappointed with him as a starter, would only keep on backup money. OG - Rex Hadnot > Not too bothered OG - Luis Vasquez > For a good value deal he's actually played quite well for us. LS - Mike Windt > I don't know much about the market for long snappers, so who knows... NT - Aubrayo Franklin > If we can get him cheap, may as well keep DE - Vaughan Martin > Hope he stays, but with emergence of Reyes he isn't a priority anymore LB - Gary Guyton > Out LB - Demorrio Williams > provided decent performance for the cost, i'd keep him OLB - Antwan Barnes > if we can work out a deal where it's good value, then I say keep OLB - Shaun Phillips > same as Barnes CB - Chris Carr > OUT CB - Antoine Cason > Depends on the money, he had a better second half of season, but he probably isn't worth starter money in my view CB - Quentin Jammer > Hope he stays as a safety / backup CB SS - Corey Lynch > not bad for a backup and on ST, i'd keep.
This is exactly the kind of personnel behavior that has gotten this team in trouble. We have a good player, who is productive, and a starter, and you're suggesting giving another team a chance to put him out of our price range so that we can save 2.8 mil? I mean, that's less than 1/40th of the cap. Brown is a good receiver, and a promising one, but he's not going to outperform Alexander assuming both are in the same role. Does anyone actually know what his knee issues have been? Does he have a degenerative condition in his knees, or did he just get injured repeatedly? I'm not saying to give him 5 years 60 mil here, but a 1 year 3.4M RFA tender is hardly expensive for a number 1 receiver, and it's also not likely to mean the difference between the team being able to sign someone or not. Also, it sounds to me like a 2nd round tender is likely to result in him getting a contract from another team that would then cost more than 3.4 mil on the cap to match, while also posing more long-term risk for the team vis-a-vis injury, which you seem to suggest doing.
No, the personnel behavior that has gotten us in trouble is tendering guys a 1 year deal that no one will pay, then letting that player walk. If you want the guy, sign the guy. If not, trade his *** and get something for him. No matter what the issues have been, he has had 5 knee surgeries on his left knee since his sophomore year in college. To expect it to not continue being an issue, is expecting the unrealistic. In all honesty, I seriously doubt that any team in the league would give up a 2nd for him if no one was willing to give up a 1st to get Mike Wallace, who is 10x more proven of a player and who has zero injury history
No way would I let Martin go. We need depth, and Martin can play along the DL too. Your exactly right, depth has been a problem with this team. If it wasn't for Reyes when Martin got hurt, we would of been screwed and probably sign Jacques Cesaire or Luis Castillo's of the world.
VJ? Brees? They were both tendered 1 year tenders, at a price that no team in the league would pay, and refused to accept less, which resulted in them walking with nothing in return. Once again, if you want a guy, sign the guy. If not, trade his *** and get something for them
Completely agreed.. If someone does take a gamble on him for a 2nd rounder, no problem with it. Saves us money, and we can use that extra pick, either for WR or another need. Also if someone takes him for a 2nd, you can go out and get a quality WR - Danny Amendola, Donald Driver, Gregg Jennings, Julian Edelman, Brian Hartline, Ramses Barden, Brandon Gibson, or even Kevin Ogeltree. And take into account we still have Floyd, Meachem, Royal, Brown, and possibly Spurlock, adding a true WR2 would do us good.
Mike Wallace was a RFA last year, and was tendered a 1st round tender, and not a team in the NFL even talked to him about a contract. What makes anyone thing Alexander would get attention with a 2nd round tender?
I was gonna say a 3rd, but I feel like a team would take the gamble on him for the fact him came in with 2 months left to the season and put up the numbers he did. So I feel like wherever Norv is, he would highly suggest a team to spend a 3rd on him.
How so? McMichael has been a very good blocking TE for us, and to go out and try to find a guy like him will hard to find. He also brings that veteran swagger to the locker room as well. I want to see Green more, so if MM was kept, then Green I believe would see more time than if Rosario was retained.
