The Chargers already signed one wide receiver this week. Now, they've added another. Eddie Royal arrived at Chargers Park on Thursday and clearly liked what he saw, agreeing to a contract. Its length and details were not immediately released. The slot receiver, who spent his first four seasons with the Broncos, projects as a No. 4 wide receiver and punt returner. On offense, Royal is a proven playmaker underneath out of the slot. He'll look to rebound from a rough 2011, slowed by groin and toe injuries before suffering a concussion on Dec. 4. In 2010, Royal caught 59 passes for 627 yards and three touchdowns. He ranked third among wide receivers with an average of 6.9 yards after the catch. His best season came in 2008 when he totaled 91 receptions, 980 yards and five scores as a rookie. Royal has averaged 11.9 yards per punt return since entering the league, third in the NFL over that span. On Tuesday, the Chargers reached a four-year contract with wide receiver Robert Meachem. He signed Wednesday. Royal joins Meachem, Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown as the team's primary wide receivers. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/15/royal-visit-chargers-park/
He is pretty goof for a #4 receiver. I think Vincent Brown will end up the #4 - barring a Floyd injury of course.
I like. Went from a bit of a downgrade w/ Jackson for Meachum, to a potentially very dynamic tandem. Gates + Meachum + Royal could be pretty fun to watch and hard to cover.
Can't wait to hear AJ gloat about how people say he never signs FA's. You know he will have a smart @ss remark about it.
Another guy who can't keep his number. Meachem 17 = Rivers Johnson 95 = Phillips McClain 44 = Brinkley (for now) Royal 19 = Alworth
Yeah well, letting the roster fall apart might have something to do with that. haha AJ can stuff it up his *** for all I care.
And some reasoned members of our board will respond regardless: But but but he didn't sign VJ and he didn't sign Mario, you're just happy with scraps and bad FAs and and and HE SUCKS!!11!!!elevnty!
Actually, I prefer Meachem and Royal over VJ. VJ did not add any ST to our team so I am glad we let him go.
Proven players are also expensive, and sometimes wasted and get frustrated when they're buried on the depth chart.
My $0.02 on this - we are hitting offense as hard as we can and we will carpet bomb defense in the draft
i know "defense wins championships" but look at the last 3 super bowl winners.. Giants (Nicks, Cruz, Manningham), Packers (Jennings, Nelson, Driver, Finley, Jones), Saints (Colston, Meachem, Henderson, Moore, Bush, Jimmy Graham)
That's pretty interesting, maybe just the sort of voodoo type reverse super back flip hex we need. These numbers mean something.....
+1 I still hope we draft a RT or OLB in the first, but it's looking more like the team is adding to the secondary through the draft and not free agency.
I have got to imagine Pass rushing OLB and SS are our top two targets, they have to be. I've been predicting we get a replacement RT for years and it never happens, so I'm just going to assume that we aren't going to do it this year
Is there any chance that DeAndre McDaniel is the answer at strong safety. And could Royal take over the third down back roll that Sproles use to have.
Word is Darrell Stuckey is going to get a shot at playing time this season at strong safety for us he has been impressive on special teams for us last season... Seeing if they sign a safety or how early they draft one will show us just how confident they truly are in stucky
He might have been a productive college player but he went undrafted in the 2011 nfl draft... heres an article on stuckeyhttp://www.chargers.com/news/articl...-defense/17533da7-5f4d-451b-93b5-da97b74fdb08
