Chargers pick up option on Corey Liuget
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on April 18, 2014, 1:28 AM EDT

The San Diego Chargers have joined the group of teams to exercise their fifth-year options on 2011 NFL Draft selections.

According to Field Yates of ESPN.com, the Chargers have picked up their team option on defensive tackle Corey Liuget.

Liuget was the 18th overall selection of the 2011 NFL Draft. As per terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, all draft picks sign four-year contracts with first-round selections having a team option for a fifth season. For 2011 draft picks, teams have until May 3 to exercise their options for the 2015 season.

The option would pay Liuget $6.969 million in 2015, per NFLPA records.

Liuget has started every game over the last two seasons for the Chargers. Liuget had 7.0 sacks for San Diego in 2012 and 5.5 sacks in 2013.

That seems like a really costly sum, based on our cap room, but apart from last year he seems stout at that position to me. Hopefully we can recover some of that dead cap hit from Gaither and Meachem so it won't seem like such a great sum, (I think that's how it works! :p)

    It could've been much worse.......

In 2011, the NFL collective bargaining agreement standardized rookie contracts with a wage scale. All first-round contracts must carry a four-year length with a fifth-year team option. For players taken first to 10th overall, the option is worth the average base salary of the league's top 10 highest-paid players at the respective position. For players 11 through 32, it's worth the average of the top 25, excluding the two highest paid.

Liuget, 24, was the No. 18 choice.

His option is worth $6.969 million instead of $10.633 million, a savings of $3.694 million. May 3 was the deadline to exercise it.

And fortunately, Flucker was picked at #11, which also keeps his 5th year at a cheaper rate.

A 1/3 off sales price without having to beg, borrow and steal for the so called, "San Diego discount"? Sound like a winner for the FO :sneaky:

And people thought Little Johnny was crazy when he said he was very happy with having the #11 pick last year..... this is the reason why. Any money saved on one player, is an opportunity to upgrade elsewhere.

Are you thinking of a certain mid-aged, pot-bellied, former bleached-blonde, greying, gimpy, former jack-the-lad Aussie, when you mentioned "people"? ;)

I figure that what his base salary is going to be (give or take) after we extend his contract. So we might as well get use to it now:whistling:
