    CHARGERS SCOUTING REPORT

    Kansas City Chiefs

+ KICKOFF: 10 a.m. Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium

+ SERIES: Kansas City leads 47-43-1. The Chargers won the last meeting 28-20 on Oct. 30.

PLAYER TO WATCH: RB Larry Johnson

With Chargers LB Shawne Merriman ending RB Priest Holmes' season back in October with a vicious hit, Johnson has taken over the running duties for the Chiefs. And what a job he's done, rushing for a team-record 100 yards in seven consecutive games. In 10 career NFL starts, Johnson has eclipsed the century mark eight times. Johnson, a third-year pro out of Penn State and a former first-round pick, has an amazing blend of speed and strength which makes him difficult to bring down in the open field ---- or by a single defender near the line of scrimmage. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Johnson rushed for 167 yards with two touchdowns on 31 carries in last week's loss to the Giants.

    OFFENSE

The Chiefs have a better offense, statistically, than the Colts ---- and that's saying something. With Trent Green at the helm, the Chiefs are undefeated in 10 December games at Arrowhead. Overall, Green (14 TDs, 10 interceptions, 62.1 percent completion mark) has been hot of late, posting a 100-plus rating in three of his last five starts. Johnson spearheads the running game, with lead blocks from two-time Pro Bowl FB Tony Richardson. In TE Tony Gonzalez, Green has a reliable target who has been to the Pro Bowl six times and is the first tight end in NFL history to register eight consecutive seasons with at least 50 receptions. Last year against the Chargers, Gonzalez set a team record with 14 receptions for 144 yards. Eddie Kennison is the top wideout with 59 receptions for a team-high 932 yards with five TDs. Dante Hall, the Chiefs' star returner, also has 28 catches for 373 yards and two TDs.

    DEFENSE

It's obvious tackling is an issue here, as Tiki Barber rushed for 220 yards in the Giants' win over the Chiefs. Overall, the defense is ranked No. 28, with only the lowly 49ers faring worse in defending the pass. The Chiefs' run defense is top-10 caliber, but it faces a huge test in trying to slow down LaDainian Tomlinson. MLB Kawika Mitchell paces the team with 121 tackles and 13 passes defensed. LE Eric Hicks is having a good year with four sacks and a team-high 12 tackles for losses. But RE Jared Allen is probably the Chief the Chargers are most concerned with because of his team-high 10 sacks and the 31 times he has pressured quarterbacks. Allen also has seven forced fumbles, one off the team mark held by Derrick Thomas. Allen's 19 sacks in his first two seasons is second only to Thomas (30) over a similar span. FS Greg Wesley leads the Chiefs with six interceptions, only four fewer than the Chargers' entire team.

    NOTEWORTHY

When the Chargers won in K.C. last year, it snapped a seven-game losing streak at Arrowhead. ... Some speculate former Chargers head coach Al Saunders will become the Chiefs' next head coach if Dick Vermeil decides to step aside. He's currently the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. ... Crucify ex-GM Bobby Beathard, if you will, for picking QB Ryan Leaf with the second overall pick in 1998. But give Beathard credit for snagging Green, an ex-Charger, with the 222nd selection in 1993. ... Chargers assistant secondary coach Albert Lewis played in 150 games with the Chiefs, recording 38 INTs. ... Chargers OL coach Carl Mauck held the same position with the Chiefs from 1986-88. ... Hall of Fame WR Charlie Joiner, a former Charger, is the Chiefs' receivers coach.

I'm still of the opinion that this game can be really bad for the Bolts if they are not done concentrating on what happened on Sunday..

Nah, they are over it Bas, just like how they were over the Dolphins loss entering the Colts game.
