November 26, 2011; Columbia, SC, USA; Clemson Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd (10) is pressures by South Carolina Gamecocks defensive end Melvin Ingram (6) on a pass play in the first quarter of the game at the Williams-Brice Stadium. Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

With the 18th pick in the NFL Draft....the Chargers got a defensive end/linebacker that most believed would go as early as the Top 10.

    Call Melvin Ingram a steal.

Mel Kiper Jr of ESPN called the selection the "best value pick in the draft".

The six-foot-2 270 lb. defensive end is a pash rusher who excelled against some of the best offensive lines in the country in the SEC while starring at the University of South Carolina. He ran a 4.69 40-yard dash at the combine.

Besides speed, he's described a super quick and very versatile where he lines up on the field, and possesses the proverbial "motor".

Some draft experts even referred to Ingram as the best defensive end in the Draft. He's a guy you expect to produce a pash rush for the Chargers for the next decade. That's not bad with the 18th overall pick.

Ingram was named All-American first-team by The NFL Draft Report, American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp, Sporting News, Associated Press, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Rivals.com and Pro Football Weekly.

In 2011 at South Carolina, he started all 13 games at right defensive end and totaled 48 tackles (31 solos), and tied for 13th in the nation with an average of 0.77 sacks per game, totally six on the year.

I think the run on DTs and receivers really helped us out. You have to think Smitty was drooling as 17th came in that he could draft BPA at our biggest need.

Best pick of the first round. This kid will a pass-rush star in that defense. Teams that passed on this kid will regret it.

Maybe he knows what he's talking about this time. A+
