SAN DIEGO (AP)—The San Diego Chargers have taken Illinois defensive tackle-end Corey Liuget with the 18th pick overall in the NFL draft.

The Chargers, known to be looking for an impact player on defense, went with Liuget even though Cal’s Cameron Jordan was still available. Part of the Chargers thinking could be to improve against the run within the AFC West.

Liuget skipped his senior season to enter the draft.

He was a second-team All-Big Ten pick in 2010, when he had 4 1/2 sacks and 63 tackles.
