    Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

I had a long conversation with San Diego general manager A.J. Smith when I visited the team's minicamp earlier this month. Smith discussed many topics, including his head coach Norv Turner.

Smith knows that Turner has been maligned. He knows that his decision to replace regular-season warrior Marty Schottenheimer with Turner after the 2006 season was and still is unpopular in some circles. Smith doesn't care. He believes in Turner.

Smith said what most pleases him about Turner is his ability to shine when the pressure is on. The Chargers are 19-13 in the regular season under Turner. However, the Chargers are 12-2 under Turner in December and January, and 9-0 under Turner in December. After just two seasons, Turner is tied for the most playoff victories in team history (three, tied with Don Coryell and Bobby Ross).

Schottemheimer was fired after a 14-2 regular season. However, San Diego lost at home in its first playoff game to end the season.

"Norv is great under pressure," Smith said. "He is cool and he makes the right decisions. The players realize that and it helps them on the sidelines. He's smart and he helps me. I'm glad we have him."

Say what you want about Turner, but he has won some big games in San Diego and it is clear he has the full support of his boss.

    8-8 and a playoff spot?

The title should read, "Chargers' Turner gets insanely lucky when it counts."

No, it should read "Without that clueless phat-*** Cottrell in the mix & Chud back on board, Norv has a real shot at taking us all the way home".

Luck helping them into the playoffs notwithstanding, you can't deny the Dec/Jan record.

Dude just needs to quit getting off to slow starts.

He's got my support this coming year but I don't want to go through any more slow starts.

It seems to me that Norv and the Chargers have a 100% playoff appearance since norv has been in charge.

Also we have under Norv, and no other coach since Ross (if I recall correctly) won playoff games in both seasons.

So I will give Norv the benifit of the doubt. However there are no excuses for slow starts this season. Merriman is back, Cotrell is gone. The Chargers should and damn well better hit the ground running. Churn and burn babee, light up that damn scoreboard.

Here's a car that get 100 miles to the gallon.
Reaches speeds up to 250 MPH.
    All brand new parts.
    All fluids freshly changed.
    Full tank of gas.

Oh... and in the glove compartment, there's an AAA membership card and $50,000 for your pocket.
I've also radioed in the police and told them to keep Freeway 5 free of all traffic for you.

Think you can get the car from San Diego to Oceanside?

Tisssssssssssss. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I would say yes but the passenger side-view mirror looks a little crooked. I'm not going to make any promises. And if I do make it, I'm going to use up most of that petty cash.

I don't disagree that Norv has done some good things, and the playoffs are never a gimmie in this league, but this post was just too funny. Here's to hopin we are all in love with Norv come February. :icon_party::icon_toast:

Under Norv, the Chargers have played their best in the games that count the most. You could not say that for the Marty teams.

Don Coryell was handed a 7-7 team, and he made them into a great team.

Bobby Ross was handed a 4-12 team, and he made them into a great team.

Norv was handed a 14-2 team and doesn't have to do squat!

I hope the W - L doesnt keep going down. If you think about it after the 14-2 season Norv steps in went to 11-5 and then 8-8 the season after. but both made palyoff.???? Its a toss up for me. I like Norv

Hmmmmm. If I recall correctly... The entire Chargers organization was a mess when Marty came here and had been for almost a decade.

He was handed a clunker that was pulled out of the garbage.
He turned that dirty old clunker into a sweet running Lamborghini.

All Norv has to do is drive it.

    The team will be fine.

Barry Switzer got the Cowboys a Super Bowl victory.

Norv was handed a team that had not won a playoff game ever (except for David Binn)....and the Franchise hadn't won one in 12 years or some crap (which Actually was better than Marty by a year)

I don't think it's hard to understand at all... If you were handed everything listed above, could you get the car from San Diego to Oceanside?

    Yes or No?

And yet he still did more than Marty ever did with the team.

Unless you think 14-2/one and done is better than 11-5/AFC Championship Game?

Your analogy doesn't fly because not just anyone can coach an NFL team, no matter how talented they are.

I could get a car from San Diego to Oceanside with just the full tank of gas and a working car and none of the other amenities you listed. Why do you need a car to reach 250 mph to get it from San Diego to Oceanside?

Hmmmmm... Who did we have on receiving?
    McCardell was out.
    Floyd was on IR.
    We didn't have Chambers.
Jackson was in his rookie season.

Not to mention... Rivers was in his first season as starter.
As disappointing as that season ended... this should not be overlooked. This was our second playoff appearance and we went against a team that's been there and won it all many times.
The loss was based on an experience factor that the Patsies had over us!

We should hire Marty back as our regular season HC and then let Norv take over in December.

Wasn't the team that Marty was handed 5-11 (followed by a 1-15 season)?

What coach can't work with a 14-2 team?
Norv won the lottery!!! All he has to do is sit, do nothing, and collect all the credit. He had absolutely NOTHING to do with building and developing this team.

Don't forget... Barry Switzer got the Cowboys a Super Bowl title.

What difference does it make? Marty still had the team and couldn't do as much with them as Norv was able to accomplish.

    Just to avoid any excuses.

As for the analogy... it's in reference to getting a great team to the playoffs in a horrible division. Doesn't take much of a coach to get that job done.
Wouldn't take much of a driver to deliver the car either.

As I said "he was handed a 5-11 team (followed by a 1-15 season)."

If Norv took the 5-11 team to the AFC Championship... then we'd be talking a different story!!!
If Marty was handed a 14-2 team and the 2006 season ended the same way... then we'd be talking a different story.

    None of those things happened.
