Is losing the goal? Absolutely not. Hoewever, every team, which does not win the superbowl, receives a competitive advantage, directly in proportion to, how poorly they play. Therefore, based on the NFL Draft, it is beneficial to be awful (especially with the new rookie pay scale) several years in a row, than to be mediocre. The NFL encourages teams to either be champions, or to be atrocious. When my team is no longer capable of being a championship team, I'm entirely for the worst performance possible, and anyone with any other viewpoint is not interested in the long term interests of the team.
Defense stats were padded because we play in the lousiest division in football. How can you beat up the Ravens one week then get beaten up by the Lions the next week when you needed to win. If the team isn't average their thinking definitely is.
The Chargers are average for now; have a lot of pieces in place but are going to need it all to come together. The whole better than their record angle is BS; 8 and 8 is just that equal amounts of greatness and garbage. The window is so damn close to being closed; it's time for some moves to be made as all the bullets have been shot and it's throw the gun at the bear time!
I don't know how I never noticed this post (booze?), but I never suggested that the Chargers should tank a whole season.
