<font class="newstext">Brees slipped to the second round of the draft, and the Chargers considered themselves fortunate to grab him with the first pick in that round. </font>

<font class="newstext">As the backup to Doug Flutie, Brees played in just one game, rallying the Chargers from a 19-0 third-quarter deficit to a 20-19 lead at Kansas City. Brees was 15-of-27 for 221 yards and a touchdown in a game the Chargers eventually lost 25-20.</font></blockquote>
