Funny, that the Dolphins didn't want to pay their own aging LT with back problems, but there're interested in another team's aging LT with back problems.

To be fair, he's probably very cheap and could win the job over McClain, He seems like the better fit of FB that McCoy andWhiz have used

Well he won't see a big role at the traditional FB position. He'd have to serve as an H-back. I don't care for the signing, I'm sure it's filling out the roster.

But, this could also tell you the direction there taking with McClain. They could see McClain as the power back to Mathews, and I wouldn't be surprised, if he is used like Tolbert was.

Chargers claimed ILB D.J. Smith off waivers from the Packers.
Nice pickup for rookie GM Tom Telesco. Smith, 24, has performed solidly and even flashed some playmaking ability (five PBUs, one INT, two sacks) across nine career starts while playing as an every-down inside 'backer in Green Bay's 3-4. The Packers cut him due to a failed physical after suffering a major injury last October. Even if Smith doesn't contribute in 2013, the Chargers could stash him on PUP or I.R. and have a good player for cheap in 2014.

Quick note; a guy in my office who is an eagles fan noted that we made a great pick up. Cheap, starting experience, good hitter. No complaints but I wonder what that means for the draft

I was thinking the same thing, Maybe nothing but could also be they may plan on losing a pick or two and are just covering their butts. From what I read on Smith is he was a solid player in GB, his knee injury caused them to cut him though. We may or may not get the same player. Worth the risk IMO

He's been at the Dolphins facility basically all day. He could sign today. I don't want that loser in San Diego. If you thought Jared Gaither was bad..

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports the Chargers have not scheduled a visit with free agent LT Bryant McKinnie.
The Chargers and McKinnie did talk on Monday and a visit could be set up any day now, but it hasn't happened to this point. The 33-year-old took a physical for the Dolphins on Monday, and the Ravens are said to be "very much in the mix" to re-sign McKinnie. He and Max Starks are the only two viable starting left tackle options on the free-agent market not named Jared Gaither.

So the UT doesn't think Clabo can start at LT?

No? He's best at ROT, and ROT only. He'll get beat at LOT, doesn't have the feet to mirror pass rushers.

I think we should at least reach out to Demetress Bell, Jamaal Brown, and Max Starks.

I don't understand why we've checked in on McKinnie, a guy who is notorious for collecting a pay check and starting trouble. He got lucky he's even in this discussion right now, he decided to show up for the playoffs and ride an emotional wave set forth by Ray Lewis in that locker room. They all had that "let's play hard for Ray" type attitude. He didn't do squat the entire season.

Right now, I got to say that McKinnie, Clabo, Bell, Brown, or Starks would be fine. Each of them would be better as a starting LT then Dunlap.

Updating a previous item, the Chargers signed ILB D.J. Smith (ACL surgery) to a two-year contract worth $1.07 million.
He got a $103,152 signing bonus. It was previously reported that San Diego claimed Smith off waivers, but he actually signed a brand-new contract. Smith may have to open the season on PUP, but he's showed well enough in past opportunities that Smith could eventually contribute as a nickel 'backer or even a starter.

Dwight Freeney a possibility? Highly doubt it. If he comes at a good price on a 1 year deal I'd take it. Don't care that he didn't transition well to a 3-4, he still played with his hand in the dirt 80 % of his snaps. His problem has been injuries last few seasons. But, he brings vet leadership and could teach some of these guys that deadly spin move.

I was thinking this same thing last night after I read Rappaport mention 4 or 5 teams are interested. I was hoping one would be us. He had 5 sacks last year but thats 5 more than we have right now, I also think he would be great just as a pure pass rusher. I also just tweeted Acee asking him if he ha heard anything about Telesco possibly having some interest,

@ProFootballTalk: Dwight Freeney ready to start making visits...” >Hmm. Doesn't fit Chargers youth movement. Does fit former Colt criteria.

@UTKevinAcee@ProFootballTalk We do need someone to get after the QB, do you think Telesco considers bringing him in?

@Elliott24Ryan Price is key here for Chargers. Playing time could be key for Freeney. The two are linked too.

I dont see Freeney as a need. OL is a need, there are places more hurting than the DL. Spend the money elsewhere is my hope.

Well we can probably spend at OL and OLB at this point. We're going to make a few signings in the coming days, I think we have 87 players right now, think Telesco is trying to get the 90 bodies into camp.

If he signs Conc, that would count as two bodies....... think of the savings. ;)

So I guess this means a no go on Starks? Isn't Justice a RT? Would this be better or worse than Starks?
