SAN DIEGO - Shawne Merriman will go onto the depth chart at outside linebacker when he arrives at Chargers Park, and part of that will be out of necessity.
San Diego's linebacker contingent is thinning out because of injuries just four days into full-squad workouts.
"We're not even two deep at linebacker," Coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "We're down to seven linebackers in a defense that plays four."
None of the injuries appears serious enough for long-term concern, but they've made preparation difficult. Donnie Edwards sat out both practices Monday with a bruised knee. Steve Foley and Randall Godfrey have balky knees as well. Ben Leber has a bad foot, and rookie Marcus Harris has had problems with his back.
"Better now than the regular season," Schottenheimer said.
