Confirmed: Ken Griffey Jr., 39, returns to Mariners Ken Griffey Jr. is returning to the Seattle Mariners. The outfielder's agent, Brian Goldberg, confirmed Wednesday night that, after an emotional, topsy-turvy week that kept two teams, their fans and even Griffey's family in suspense, Griffey has agreed to a one-year contract with the team for which he played the first 11 years of his career. A free agent who finished last season with the Chicago White Sox, Griffey had been in negotiations with the Mariners and the Atlanta Braves this week with reports at various times calling his signing imminent — with both teams. He finally decided on Seattle after two days of discussions at his Orlando home with his family and agent. "He's coming home. ... I can't begin to tell you how ecstatic we are. He is, too," Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said in confirming the deal.
He still has one of the prettiest swings I've ever seen. It's too bad he couldn't stay healthy. He likely would have broken the all time HR record without steroids.
