The San Diego Chargers placed fourth-year linebacker Ben Leber on Injured Reserve with a foot injury and signed safety Scott McGarrahan to the active roster.

The 31-year-old McGarrahan is in his eighth NFL season. The University of New Mexico graduate spent the 2003-04 seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Last season, he started one contest at strong safety and played in all 16 games en route to recording a career high with 29 defensive tackles. McGarrahan led the Titans in special teams tackles in 2003 (24) and tied for the team lead in 2004 (16).

Prior to his stint in Tennessee, McGarrahan spent two seasons (2001-02) with the Miami Dolphins, where he primarily played on special teams. He was drafted by the Packers in the sixth round (156th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft he and played three seasons (1998-2000) in Green Bay before being released and signing with Miami.

His career totals include 83 tackles on defense, three sacks, one interception and 96 tackles on special teams.

As a collegian, McGarrahan was a three-year starter at New Mexico and finished his career with 316 tackles, three interceptions and five sacks. He earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a senior.

Leber started six games for the Chargers this season and played in the first nine games. He posted 22 tackles and two sacks prior to missing the last two weeks with a foot injury. He was replaced in the starting lineup prior to Week 7 and saw the majority of his action on special teams.
