I don't know whats worse expecting English to step up, or expecting him to stay healthy.

Neither Freeney or Abraham are fits for the 3-4 anyway..... they would be a waste of money.

Yeah, except Freeney's 5 sacks last year were better than what we had or have this year. I think it would be a major upgrade to have him on the roster this year. He was still transitioning into the position, Two major things do factor into us getting him though, one being money, and two would he prefer to go to a 4-3 team.

If we can get him, it would be a huge way to stop the bleeding. We still need help on the O line and now at the OLB position, unless Telesco thinks English and 5th round rookie Tourek Williams are the answer he needs to do some major cutting or re working contracts to get some money quickly.

Like I said earlier though I expect to see a lesser known or lesser impact player come in. Like a Matt Roth or Nick Barnett (being the lesser impact guys)

I guess we will have to wait and see what Tommy T is going to do about it. Everything else is just opinion...

This is pretty crippling, and there's nothing to be happy about here. He's going to lose a lot of muscle mass, and it'll probably take him a while to recover his explosiveness, if he ever does. He's out for this season, and probably a good bit of the OTAs next year. Maybe he'll make TC.

Also, I don't know if this will push our record low enough to be contending for a top 5 pick next year, let alone the number 1 to have a chance at Clowney, but I'd rather finish with the worst record in football than go 7-9.

We don't have the money for Freeney, and he's not a good fit....... don't see it happening.

Look on the bright side, Dunlap may tank and we'll be back to Harris at LT.

That top pick may still be in our grasp. ;)

It was his first season in the 3-4 last year and he was still a big pressance and threat even if he only had 5 sacks. With some more coaching from Pagano and McCoy he could still be a big help for us and probably improve on last seasons numbers. But I still don't see it happening due to cap reasons.

Between our dubious RB, WR, TE, OLB, C, and LT situations, it's certainly possible. Just have to hope that Rivers doesn't die out there. As we've seen over the history of the draft, it's not just about how bad you suck, but how bad everyone else sucks as well. 5-11 wasn't good enough for a top 5 pick last year, but this year it might get you 1st overall, you just never know.

Freeney can't cover for :poop:. The OLB position in the 3-4 requires pass coverage ability. Phillips was decent in pass coverage, but he sucked against the run.

Regardless, we don't have the money for a guy like Freeney.

Even if we still had him, he wouldn't be the answer. We need a starter, not a rotational guy (who's strictly a one-trick-pony).

What we really have to hope for is that coaching and ownership are smart enough to realize it isn't Philip Rivers' fault when he gets blindsided by Von Miller and throws a pick six, nor the fault of our CBs when we finish 32nd against the pass this year.

Because regardless if we get that franchise changing pick next year its all going to be for naught if they decide to blow up the roster. I honestly don't think we're that far away from being a 10 win team, just a LT and an OLB (now 2) away from being really dangerous.

I think the point I'm making is there is no... "answer". We don't have the money to sign Freeney, and I doubt many teams are eager to trade us anyone of value.

And I'll take a 1 trick pony like Barnes over Larry English (who has none) any day.

Honestly, there's not much to blow up. Our offensive talent is basically Rivers, DX, Brown, Allen, and Fluker, and Brown, Allen, and Fluker aren't going anywhere. On defense we have a lot of talent, but why would they want to blow it up? Virtually everyone on D is young or just beginning a contract (except Butler, but he's virtually a lock to get extended).

@Blue, honestly, as bad as their QB situation is, we might manage to have a worse season than the Raiders.

I think we have plenty of talent on offense, enough to win games. I really like the Mathews/Woodcock combo, I think Gates can still be effective, and as you mentioned we are flushed with talent at WR and I think we should all keep an eye on LaDarius Green. That said when the O-line breaks down...none of it ******* matters.

If we trade Rivers we're back to square 1 though, desperately searching for the next answer at QB while the rest of the roster ages an moves on.

My point, was that even if we had the money, Freeney isn't the answer either.

So we agree there is no "answer" at OLB....lets change the question.

Would we be a better team with Antwan Barnes (or even Shaun Phillips) on the roster?

Answer: Duh. Because now we have neither, and there is nobody else available or even affordable that can help our situation.
