But if he waits to long for major surgery (which he needs regardless), it will only set him back further. I'd rather we move on without him this season, and then having him back at the start of camp next season.

We'll miss him this season, but we should still contend for a title without him.

Yeah, and that hit on Gates, while not dirty, wasn't really necessary. He was on the ground, all they had to do was touch him down.

    Merriman won't rush his decision

That's been part of my point. How the hell could they miss these injuries and fail to repair then while they were in OR in the first place.

Merriman Has been busy with other activities instead of recovering like, throwing parties and hosting talk shows, If merriman is put on IR, AJ will prob. have no mercy and give him the boot

    Merriman won't rush his decision

Not wrong, but not 100% accurate. He is signed through '09 so even if he goes on the IR we'll still have him for another season. Not to mention that (assuming he's out for '08) he will be playing '09 to prove that he is still the force he was pre-injury and will play like a MONSTER for that monster contract. There's a reasonable chance that AJ will choose not to resign him, but that's a little different from giving him "the boot."

**** that, don't give them the satisfaction. Blame whomsoever has been treating Merriman's knees since they were originally injured and misdiagnosed.

So all blame and emotion set aside can anyone answer me this...

Is there any acceptable, reasonable, or plausible explanation for going an entire offseason without realizing that you have two torn ligaments?

Also, is there any similarly justifiable reason for doctors to have missed this when he had surgery in March?

It's quite possible that the condition of his knee has worsened of late. Just speculating, but my guess is that they knew about the tear but it was minor and not something that needed surgery, but at some point during the offseason, either during workouts or during training camp, the knee got worse. I have a hard time believing that Merriman was just misdiagnosed. He had some of the best orthopedists in the world consulting him.

I've never played an IDP league. Sounds interesting. I picked up the Chargers D/ST though.

I think Shawne knew about the PCL.

That's the part I don't understand. You know they did extensive X-ray and probably MRI work before they went in there. Maybe it's a condition for which you specifically have to be searching--in conjunction with other tests designed specifically to test that ligament--in order to find it. :icon_shrug:

    Nobody's medical staff missed anything.

Both tears have been known about for quite some time.

Shawne has been playing with the PCL injury since 2006, and the LCL injury occurred in the game @ TEN.

His March 2008 surgery was to help repair his meniscus, or his knee cartilage. For reasons unknown, neither ligament tear was repaired at this time.

We can guess that Shawne elected not to have them repaired because he wanted to be able to play this upcoming season.

When the pain did not go away and began to get worse, he went to visit the outside specialists to get their opinions, who told him that he needs to have reconstructive surgery.

Again, nobody missed anything. What was fixed and not fixed were conscious decisions made probably by Merriman in consultation with team doctors.

If that's the case then i wonder just how much more damage could be done considering

Not a good call...IDP's are so freaking hard to control. I did one two yrs. ago and i will never do one again. Got Chargers DST/SP though this year over on Yahoo 'cause NFL.com is being really gay.

A lot more damage, especially because the PCL injury is a grade III tear.

I think Merriman is going to end up playing, just because he wants to and can't bear sitting out. This is really dangerous, and I wouldn't be surprised if he does himself major damage before the season is done.

And then when he sits down at the negotiating table in 2009... AJ will say: "Shawne, thanks for sacrificing your career and helping us get that Superbowl Trophy. Now the time has come to reward your efforts... BUT... (needle scratch)":icon_eek:

Why? He wont be real effective if he does play. Id rather see him shut it down and get it fixed.

He wont be the same player with two torn ligaments and GUARANTEED posters here will be saying he isnt that great without roids and we should trade him.

Yes, those posters would be idiots but it will still happen.

I agree 100%. I also think that the decision, whatever it is, needs to be made soon. Let's get things decided before we start trimming the roster down.
