Just in:Quiet concern in the organization that Shawne Merriman's career could be

Now if this story is true and it's really two (tears)... he'll be having the surgery and will not play this season:
    http://proxy.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3550426

No way he'll risk renegotiating a contract after playing on bad knees. If he does, he's an idiot.

Is there more to the Merriman situation?

And who says they didn't know about Merriman's injury? And how exactly did the team screw up Hardwick and Gates injuries?

    Merriman won't rush his decision

Won't happen, but the NFL rules committee absolutely needs to write a sunshine rule on injuries, conforming to medical confidentiality laws. If the team is in on the info, then I suspect that they may not apply. The league must also know the details. Any of you lawyers know the lay of the law? I am mortally sick of the BS surrounding injuries. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that everyone concerned knew the extent of Merriman's injuries and they still fiddle f*&%ed around for months and months, when the proper treatment and/or surgery would have resolved things already.

Yeah man, hardwick was told to get the surgery by the charger staff, he consulted w/ another doctor who said he could wait.

Gates got his surgery asap, and it's just a long recovery... Not sure what the story on parker was. But **** happens.

Waiver Wire? We doan need no stinking Waiver Wire! We have enough guys in our own roster who are better than any scrub we could get off the wire. We've been talking about tough cuts-it's our waived players that will be the center of attention, but if SM gets the proper surgery, which it appears he needs, then we are our own waiver wire since we won't have to make at least one of those tough cuts.

I don't think the Chargers screwed up with Merriman. Merriman had his surgery done by Andrews, who is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world. It wasn't the Chargers trainers but Andrews who diagnosed Merriman and determined the best way to treat him. I still think that Shawne will end up playing this year. He might miss the start of the season, but I seriously doubt he'll miss the year.

According to Acee in saturdays mailbag Dr Chao did the surgery on Merriman and not Andrews?. It appears both ligaments were not 'touched' during surgery and that they concentrated on the meniscus.

Amazing how we all get comfortable talking about knee injuries so fast isn't it!!?.

    Merriman won't rush his decision

I mean the guy obviously did this before his meniscus surgery why wouldn't they have done something then? As far as the law, the NFL should keep records. It is in their best interest to look out for the players and the rules Committee needs to lay down the law on what is acceptable practice by every team's medical staff.

Injuries and how they're dealt with are so much bigger than the team. Team doctors, coaches, non team medical specialists, agents, and team management, the players doctors and many more people have thier collective hands involved in what happens when a multi million dollar team asset is in need of a fixing... Let us not forget the player who has to make a team/personal decision.

Gates DID seem to choose his words very carefully. You could easily read more between the lines without much of a stretch.

We can only watch, wait, & listen. If Shawne plays, good for us. If he doesn't, then I doubt that he gets re-signed. Either way, if Merriman makes the difference between us going to Tampa or staying home, then I submit that we're not as deep with quality talent as we'd like to think.

    Merriman wants to play

Yep, the more I hear about the injury the less I think that he should play on it. Get it fixed, see ya next year. I don't see him getting re-signed either way. Time for the subs to step up.

I've dealt with ligament damage in my left ankle and I can tell you, it ain't no picnic. If I were him, I'd get the less evasive surgery done and give it a shot for the end of the season.

Whether he is re-signed by the bolt's or not he still has his career to think about long term. To me it's a no brainer reserve the operating room and git r done.

The only question at this point is does he do the minor surgery & hope to be back in a few weeks or go for the reconstruction & sit this year out.

I'm betting that he goes the second route. :icon_sad: Can't blame him, but I don't expect to see too much more out of Shawne in a Bolts uni.

Two tears in two ligaments I'm betting he'll be out for the year, that's just too much.

Well hope Tucker/Applewhite are ready in the bullpen

if sm wants to play he will. I see him gettin minor surgery and being back on the field if we make the playoffs. if the minor doesnt work, then he will def get the major and be shelved.
