Does anyone know Mike Mccoy's true offensive identity? I know last year he was basically just holding the clipboard while peyton manning ran the show in denver. The year before that it was the tim tebow show down there and the year before tebow was the kyle orton throw almost every play offense. I know everyone wants to talk about free agents and the draft this time of year but im also interested in what the hell our offense is going to look like next year. any ideas?
He's known pretty much for developing scheme based on personal. You're gonna see the scheme change a lot depending on who he's got to work with, was very adaptable from year to year, or even within the year (see Tebow/Orton). We wont have any idea until we actually see it on the field.
Not trying to be cute or funny but if we truly don't do anything to fix our line it'll look a lot like this
Hopefully we'll finally get to see some quick passing plays that help protect PR vs that crap we've been witnessing for the past few years.
Mccoy had royal in denver im hoping we can have rookie eddie royal here in san diego next season.. Im not sure if mccoy was the coordinator that year or not
Spurlock did a decent job when he filled in. Maybe that's why they kept Goodman...... they want Spurlock to get more involved in the passing game.
I hate the goodman resigning just bc royal and spurlock are both way better wrs but i also believe both of them are way better return men as well
But when has Royal ever been healthy for an entire season? I don't see any harm with having depth at the position, considering our past injury history.
over his nfl career he has played in 15, 14, 16, 12, and 10 games... so yeah maybe hasnt played a full 16 every year but hes no larry english
He has been for us, and that's all that really matters. Can Royal stay healthy and make an impact? That's a real question, so far.
Personnel is also useless if the coaching staff doesn't put players in a position to play to their strengths... always felt like norv was set in his vertical passing offense regardless of the personnel
Well, you can't exactly change your offense midstream that easily. If you practiced one scheme all preseason, it's hard to change things up on the fly. Brown got hurt, Royal got hurt, and Meachem was ineffective. I know fans loved to blame Norv for everything, but he didn't have a lot of tools to work with. We brought in Alexander, and suddenly we could throw a few deep balls again. Don't tell me that personnel isn't a critical thing.
Obviously personnel is critical and yeah I agree but I do think with our offensive line being what it was norv could have went away from the vertical offense simply because we couldnt protect long enough to let our wr's get down field
Entire scheme changes are not needed, tweeks were and he didn't even do that. You can start calling plays that take less time to develop in order to mask the terrible O-Line, Norv didn't do that. His game plan didn't change no matter who was on the field. The line was terrible from day 1 last year, and his play calling was no different than 2010 when the line was good. It is called making adjustments, and he made zero. Personnel are definitely needed to be a great team, but so is being able to make adjustments, game planning, play calling, ect
We led the league in passes to the RBs........ is that not an adjustment? Norv wanted to have Royal for the slot, but when he got hurt, we didn't have a quick hitting WR target. None of our TEs could be called speed guys either. It wasn't until we brought Spurlock back that we have a viable inside target. Fans can say what they like, but plenty of outside NFL observers were surprised we managed to even win 7 games with our personnel, after all the injuries.
1- No its not an adjustment its a check down.... 2- If ladarius Green isnt a speed TE I dont know who is? 3- Yeah royal was hurt but stilled played in 8 games in which he was barely used in all 8 of em
The bit of irony was... it's probably a little form Column A and a little from Column B. Look back to the season that got Hal Hunter anointed as Offensive Line Coaching Guru... we were losing starting OL almost weekly, went through 3 or 4 starting centers (pretty sure we had Binn in there as the center at one point), but Rivers had an outstanding season passing... why? Because while we were still running those long developing routes, Rivers basically just waited for those receivers to take the top/safeties out of the defense and then dumped off to Sproles or Tolbert or even Hester who ground out quality YAC against LB's trying to cover them in space. Now part of this was also because even with the injuries we still managed to get enough of a POA-hold that Rivers could step up into the pocket to make that dump-off and buy enough time for the top to be taken off the D. They weren't really "designed screens" by Norv, as much as safety valve options... or Sproles having enough sense to chip and then get outside on the screen to be available as a last-chance option (something Mathews hasn't grasped yet). But at the very least Norv's plays left that option in there, as opposed to say going empty backfield with the tailback lined up in the slot when our OL was getting Rivers sacked left and right. Now the later was just monumentally boneheaded.
1 - It's what you do when no one can get open. 2 - If Green was ready, he would've played. What makes you think every draft pick is ready right away? 3 - Royal played in 10 games, but who's counting?
It was absolutely a combination of issues, both personnel and coaching (Not just HC). I think Norv and AJ would be the only people who would blame one side significantly more than the other
Well the scheme Norv was using was run wide for short gain, run up the middle for a loss, throw and incomplete pass and then punt. We seem to still have the personnel to do run that scheme...
