Padres suck, looking to get worse, so how do we make them better in a positve way?

Pads will try to trade Jake Peavy, the only player worth a damn on this pathetic team.

Why dont we trade Gonzo too and just have done with it.

Why do you care whether or not they trade Gonzo if he's not worth a damn?

Ok, other than Gonzo and Peavy and maybe Heath Bell..........EVERYONE ELSE SUCKS.

Build around your best Starter, your best reliever, and your best hitter.

The problem with the Pad's is the farm system. Until we stock up on talent we will never contend (realistically)

I'd like to see them get rid of Greene. And signing Trevor is a mistake, imo.

If they can get 3 quality starters for Jake then so be it.

    Gonzo needs to stay put.

Any rate, as far as the thread topic goes, before everyone has a coniption fit, the Padres aren't looking to trade Jake Peavy just to trade him. They're merely assessing his trade value.

Paul DePodesta (Padres assistant GM) said it best in his blog.

On a side note, I would like the thread title to be changed.

They are not the Washington Nationals. (even though they could have been had John Moores not bought the team ;) )

    Agree.

I would like to see a "How should we improve the Padres" thread.

The problem starts at the very top.

Moore’s has let this franchise drop in value on purpose.

He is in the middle of a divorce on us fans are the ones who have to suffer! Doesn’t his wife get half the Teams value in their divorce?

How do you know whether or not he did it on purpose?

I love how people pretend to know the intentions of people they've never met.

    He's worth it.

And I imagine if the team is winning again going into that year they'll keep him around. (don't scoff, they've been doing that every year since PetCo opened until this year)

Padres Shopping Peavy would have been a more appropriate title.

He is our best player hands down, but this team has many issues. If Peavy goes to another team(ghod I hope it is not the Dodgers) with a shot to make it to the WS, then good for him. But it looks like the Pads are going to want a lopsided trade. Depends on how bad a team wants him.

I would agree if he were surrounded by talent.

But, it seems like the Pads would rather spend money for mediocre players or players past their prime.

We don't know what kind of talent will or will not be there when decision time comes up.

And you can label what talent has been around him how you like, it hasn't stoped the team from being in playoff contention every year since PetCo opened until this year.

I don't follow the farm very well, but those that do have said that it's vastly improved (but still not one of the best in the bigs, just a lot better than it was before) so we'll see if that starts to pan out I guess.

I'm sorry, I must have been fooled by his sitting on the bench half the year.

You want to trade a pitcher, trade him.

And I love how you think you know everything.

How many Free agents were signed while Towers was in charge?

How many no names continued to come up from the farm?

When the Padres were trying to get Petco they told us they would increase the Payroll.

    We were lied to.

Being outside SD, I can't really speak to our farm system.I have a hard time understanding how they decide to spend their money on mediocre talent then point to the fans and say "Look! We spend!!"

If the Rays can do it on $40mil, shouldn't we be able to do it on $75??

    :icon_shrug:

Spending money to appease the fan base isn't going to get us to the WS.

Seems to me we bring in middle of the road talent hoping for a miracle season. And if the player does perform then they dump him.

I just saw a stat on ESPN.

The Rays have 4 first round draft picks since 2001 that are starters on their WS roster

How many do the Pads have?

    Greene?

For that matter, DO WE HAVE ANYONE OTHER THAN GREENE ON THE STARTING ROSTER???

I don't know everything. That's my point. I'm not the one pretending to know people's intent.

No they didn't. They said they would field a competitive team.

They've done that every year until 2008.

The Rays also benefited from having the first overall pick for 6 or 7 years in a row.

The last time the Padres picked that high they blew it with Matt Bush.

It's a good thing Kevin Towers hasn't been drafting since then, though.

    Exactly

They've also been drafting first overall in those years.

That happens when you finish at the bottom of the league year in and year out.

The Padres have, I think, the #3 pick in next year's draft.

Now that Grady Fuson and not Kevin Towers is drafting hopefully they beef up their farm even better with a good pick, one better than they get when they win the NL West.

good point. not to mention it seems like even if we had a top 10 pick we wouldn't spend the money to sign the kid. It seems like I read rumor that money was the reason we drafted Bush.

    They paid Bush.

They didn't want Stephen Drew or Jered Weaver because he had Boras as an agent.

I thought at the time that they should have drafted Jeff Niemenn or Justin Verlander. I would have been right with one of those!

Unproven talent really isn't my forte, though, so I couldn't tell you one way or another whether or not our farm has improved, but those that are generally smarter on the subject and follow the minors a lot more than I have told me that the farm has vastly improved since Fuson and Alderson took over that aspect of the team from KT.

To be honest, I am getting a tad impatient, though. Thus far Headley and Antonelli are the only ones to get to the majors (from 05's draft on) and they're just starting to get their feet wet.

We'll see what happens, though, I guess.

Damn it...I bought a Peavy Jersey last year since he got his 4 year extension. I though he would be around a while.

I love the guy. Hope he stays.

Is that what's helped him achieve his career ERA of 3.72? 3.44 as a Padre?

What about his career WHIP of 1.187? Which, by the way, is only 0.001 worse than Jake's career WHIP.
