NC Times: Defense steals thunder from Aztecs' passers

SAN DIEGO ---- The focus has been on San Diego State's starting quarterback competition but it was the Aztecs' defense that stole the show Saturday afternoon for a large portion of the intrasquad scrimmage at Qualcomm Stadium.

The offense struggled mightily during the first half of the 88-play excursion as the rebuilt defense intercepted two passes by sophomore quarterback Kevin O'Connell and thoroughly shut down the running attack.

"I know people have low expectations of the defense, but we know where we need to go as a team and we're just focusing on our journey to get there," said sophomore defensive end Antwan Applewhite, who has missed portions of practice because of summer school commitments. "We're working hard and with low expectations. We can show everybody what we're out here to do."

The offense wound up with 486 yards and six touchdowns, deceiving totals that include overtime and goal-line offense situations.
