HEAD COACH RETREADS Andy Reid Lovie Smith Jon Gruden Norv Turner Romeo Crennel Josh McDaniels Chan Gailey Ken Whisenhunt Wade Phillips Bill Cowher RISING ASSISTANTS Kyle Shanahan Mike McCoy Perry Fewell (Although we would lose Pagano with this) Brad Seely Ray Horton Darrell Bevell Mike Zimmer Jay Gruden Dirk Koetter Bruce Arians HOT COLLEGE COACHES Chip Kelly Bill O'Brien Steve Sarkisian Doug Marrone Pat Fitzgerald Gus Bradley Kirk Ferentz My preferences are in bold.
Gus Bradley is the DC of the Seahawks.. But anyways, not too many candidates on my list. Hope the Chargers make a decision soon, because there will be many hirings coming soon.
Cowher........ never going to happen. Gruden....... in what fantasy world is he leaving the cushiest job in the world? Frankly, I wouldn't want either one.
I'd need some time to learn more about some of those lesser-knowns... But I do have 2 requests, at this point: 1) No Jon Gruden. (Just look at his final 6 years of coaching, people...from World Champs to sub .500) 2) Would like to see those who perpetually whine, actually pick a fav (so no whining allowed if that guy is picked)
My guy is David Shaw of Stanford or Vic Fangio of the 49ers. But people miss important things with Gruden. I said this in one of my posts regarding this same topic, I was just saying, Gruden was handed a great team and took them to the Super Bowl. Some of it has to do with coaching. It's not all on the players. Norv was handed a great team here as well, and didn't do much with it.
People can (and do) argue about how much credit Gruden should get for 2002. What isn't in dispute is that Gruden took that team--the best in the country-- to a .468 (45-51) record over his most recent 6 seasons. Norv, on the other hand, had a pretty good team, and after some early playoff success, has infuriated Charger fans by posting a .500 (24-24) record over his most recent 3 seasons. Now, how does anyone seriously argue that 2012 Gruden is a better bet than 2012 Turner?
Well, yeah...and if it were ten years ago I might be whistling a different tune. But since that Super Bowl, Gruden was arguably an inferior coach to the guy that the villagers here are absolutely thrilled to have run out of town on a rail... (and a block of six sub-mediocre seasons [with world champ team] is hardly a small sample size)
Again not saying he is the best option, but you look at the potential staff Jon Gruden can put together and it really blows your mind. Jon would be the HC, he would most likely hire his brother, Jay Gruden, as he's done in the past as well as Rich Bisaccia, whom he's great friends with and has had on his staff, and Bisaccia could also influence the retaining of John Pagano as DC, who put together a top 10 defense with a bad secondary. Those are arguably the top 10 coordinators in 3 aspects of your game. Still, did you read the list of QB's Jon had in Tampa? Most of that Super Bowl team in 2003 did not return. And also Jon had ZERO 1st and 2nd rounders for 2 straight years.. so.. what would you possibly want him to do? Bank on Chris Simms being a franchise QB?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...to-chargers-predictions-for-coach-gm-openings NFL.com predicts who goes where, and they think Gruden to Chargers... Their justification: "Jon Gruden. This is the perfect opportunity for both parties. Gruden gets a proven veteran quarterback in Philip Rivers and a decent say in player personnel, while the Chargers get a big-name headline grabber to help sell tickets and revitalize the offense." What would you guys think about that? I agree with their logic that you can see why either side would do it, but not sure if it would actually happen.
He still went 60-57 including 3 playoff appearances with Tampa, so to me that's pretty good for somebody who never had a stable QB going into each season..
Come on guys... Gruden has the Corona Light bus. He can't be that bad. On a serious note the Chargers are asking current playoff teams to interview their coaches. That should narrow our list down some.
Yeah, I'm taking all that stuff into account. But if we aren't allowed to make O-line, injury, etc., excuses for Norv, why would we make excuses for a supposed "upgrade?" I think Gruden has a certain mystique (which he appears to enjoy, and massage). I just feel like if people are really honestly disgusted with Norv's mediocre results over the last three years, replacing him with a guy who did worse over his last six years is an absurd strategy. How could anyone who's been paying attention pretend to be surprised when Gruden fails?
Some of the Rayder fans that I was chatting with yesterday would be inclined to think otherwise, assuming that they have half a brain...
Report: Josh McDaniels tells teams he won’t interview http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/31/report-josh-mcdaniels-tells-teams-he-wont-interview/
*Airians *Cowher *Kelly Any of those would sell tickets, and be an upgrade from Norv, if the new GM can supply the players needed to support Rivers. Defense is on the right track.
