Newly signed Bolts linebacker expected to start It was the golden rule Gary Guyton learned at a young age. Be ready. "Whenever my number is called," Guyton said Wednesday after signing a one-year contract with the Chargers, "I'll be sure to be out there and do the best I can." No. 53 is ringing now. The Chargers are expected to start the veteran inside linebacker Sunday against the Panthers. He'll work on the weak side next to Takeo Spikes, filling in for Donald Butler (groin) and Demorrio Williams (ankle), who are both out with injuries. This will be Guyton's 33rd NFL start and first as a non-Patriot. He began his career in New England, appearing in 60 games between 2008 and 2011 before spending last training camp with the Dolphins and having a four-day November stint with the Cowboys. Guyton then had to wait for his chance to return the field. "It was six or seven weeks of a bye week," Guyton said with a laugh. "Let's call it that." It is unknown, given he just joined the team, how much playing time the 6-foot-3, 250-pound linebacker will see. Bront Bird and Andrew Gachkar are also able to play weak-side inside linebacker. Guyton's early-down role helps free Bird and Gachkar on special teams, allowing either to rotate on third down if needed. Bird saw heavy nickel snaps in the second half against the Steelers last week, intercepting his first career pass. Jonas Mouton does not factor into the equation. The 2011 second-round draft pick is considered strictly an option on the strong side behind Spikes.
