Seems like the Wolf has brought in a pack with him... What a truly great start to the off-season for us, I'm ecstatic that we managed to get 2 great coaches within a week to take this offense back to being that high-octane offense that we loved.
UTKevinAcee @UTKevinAcee “@DLF_Kenm: Any feel for how Chargers players are responding to front office coaching changes?” >Very positive, though that is predictable.
By the sound of it our Offense isnt going to stick to any old molds we may have had or are out there. And that is GREAT! I would love it if we could get some WRs to the top of the Receptions list rather than every RB and TE on our roster and maybe a WR in the top 5. Im glad we have a great pair of offensive minds that also can work with the players rather than fitting players into a particular system.
This does make Lerod Stephens Howling more intriguing also maybe a Deuce Lutui (I know he was cut for being over weight but Whiz may suggest we give him a shot) and for McCoy maybe a Ryan Harris?
Stevens Howlings would deffinatly help out or CB situation. And could take the pressure off to draft one high in first or second. EDIOT: Derp I was thinkin of D Ro Cro. Still would be a good pickup if we can get Howling.
I changed my mind, can we bring in Chris Ivory? FO should still be familiar with him after he smoked us in the preseason (week 3 game i beleive) last year.
I would love to bring in Ivory but I hear that the Saints are thinking about putting a 2nd round tender on him
Ray Horton has heated exchange with Keim after being passed over for Arians. Think Whiz will suggest bringing him in for DC? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/17/ray-horton-angry-after-cardinals-hire-bruce-arians/
Maybe if we bring him in as a DB coach but I think he'll land in Cleveland. Pagano is our guy for at least one more year
No confirmation other than them saying they like Pagano and would like to retain him. Im assuming as long as he's willing to learn what McCoy wants to do he's safe
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet Watch Mel Tucker to CLE RT @UTKevinAcee: Mike McCoy wants to keep defensive coordinator John Pagano. Pagano under contract for 1 more year Im assuming he's retained although anything can happen
Yeah, Horton is very likely Philadelphia or Jacksonville (not as likely) bound. Possibly Chicago, but with certain stars players (Cutler, Peppers, Briggs, Tillman) starting to get up there in age - and if they have any hope of retaining Urlacher (which they've got a better chance of now that it looks like Lovie sits out a year) - Trestman can't afford to blow up the Bears and try to make the switch to the 3-4. Horton's got a great defensive mind, so he could probably scheme from a 4-3 formation, but his background is fully in the 3-4. I could see him going to St. Louis for a year since they have most of the personnel to run a quality hybrid look - and he could stick it to the team that passed him over for Bruce freakin' Arians.
Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken Chargers announce John Pagano will be retained as team's defensive coordinator, as expected.
Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken Chargers say they'll also retain def. coaches Joe Barry (LBs), Greg Williams (asst. LBs) and Don Johnson (DL). No mention of Ron Meeks (DBs)
Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken Should stay, but changes to off. staff not expected to be announced today. RT @ShawnAguilarSD any word on Hal Hunter?
Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken Contract expired on Chargers WRs coach. Not expected back. MT@JRZ220 what's Charlie Joiner's status?
Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken Several. Offensive staff will look different; still need STs coach. RT@ccurran2744 how many more coaching additions/subtractions expected?
I hope that all that this report is saying is that he is up for a new deal. AND I hope he wants to remain with the Organization for the rest of his days coaching. If he wants to consider a OC position in the future, I am willing to keep a open mind for that to be here provided he is wanted by the new FO.
It sucks to lose him. However... if we can manage to bring Gil Byrd home (he's an "assistant" secondary coach in Chicago and they just hired a new HC and DC, so God willing he's let to run free), I'll swap one HOF Charger for another and call it a good trade. With Reich on the offensive staff (granted his area of expertise is largely QB's), you can't say that Arizona's WR's weren't a quality unit and he did oversee that this past year. Quality WR Coaches can be had, and ultimately getting really good DB coach would do us wonders both in terms of coaching guys up and in helping identify guys in the draft that can be late round steals (i.e. just need some "polishing" and the coach can see it and knows what to do - like Joiner with Brown).
I don't believe NFL teams are held to coaching limit, Joiner has earned the right to be in SD IMHO. It shouldn't affect the hiring of Gil Byrd either way, who is one trippy dude by the way. I don't find it possible to have to many great coaches on staff, then again that's just me.
There is no limit to the number of coaches an NFL team can have, other than how much money the owner is willing to pay. In 2010 Dallas had the fewest at 18, Minnesota had the most at 25.
Was speaking more in terms of addressing where the needs are greater for improved teaching on our team and player membership rather than the logistics of the number of coaches.
