LOL....... they are not cutting Brown for heavens sake.

The guy is a third round pick that has been injured most of camp. He's not going anywhere people..... trust me. ;)

on both sides a lot of to do, Mr. Turner. But there is enough depth to bring onto the field.
It will be interesting to see the 53-roster next week. We'll have a superb practise squad.

Recorded the 2am replay of the game, finished watching about an hour ago.

As this was the 3rd game of the pre-season, it's a fairly good look at what you have in your starters & a last look at a few guys who aren't gonna make it.

    A few thoughts ....

    Offense

Run blocking sucked *** once again. I view McNeill as a better pass blocker than run blocker so his addition back into the mix won't necessarily help much here. Hope to see more of Summers soon as we could use his bulk for opening up some holes. Pass blocking wasn't great but better than the run blocking. Dombo may have regressed, Green isn't likely to beat out Vasquez.

Rivers was kinda shaky early on. Not his best performance - the Peterson pick-6 shouldn't have been thrown. Nice to see why we hung on to Floyd. Good to see Gates on the field. Walters is making it tough to cut him. Right now I'd give him the nod over Goodman. Brown will stick - he'd have had at least 2 more catches with PR throwing the ball. Volek led the winning drive, but he also made some really poor throws.

Mathews needs to be rolled in stick-um before the games. WTF, dude? You looked around, saw guys coming up on you, & STILL didn't wrap the ball up with 2 hands? You'll make a good back-up for some team in a few years. Todman's "slow feet" looked pretty good again. I'd really like to see Summers beat out Hester for the FB position but I doubt AJ lets that happen. Tolbert is still 1 in the 1, 1A scenario.

    Defense

Our defensive backfield looked pretty rough on more than a few plays. Cason can't blame all of his poor play on the hand. Took some poor tackling angles & got toasted on the long TD to Fitz. Looked to me like he may have been expecting more help over the top from the safeties. Sanders didn't seem to be around the ball as much this game. Stuckey made a couple of nice stops, as did Gilchrist.

Not seeing much from Spikes so far. Run-stuffing is supposed to be his strength but I saw him getting pushed around/washed out of plays a number of times. Butler has a lot to learn & damn little time to do it. Same for Mouton. Cooper should go ahead & get that surgery because he sure isn't much help to the team on the field. Gamble is OK, but not likely to make the final cut. Barnes is a force in the pass rush but a liability in stopping the run.

Liuget is a manster. Cam Thomas is as useless as boobs on a soda machine. Martin continues to be pretty impressive in his 3rd year. He might be a better backup at NT than anyone else we have on the squad, but I'm also hoping that he can work his way into a strong rotation at DE. Maybe we move him around some this year?

Good game overall for the ST. Schmitt was already on the outside looking in. After kicking the ball out of bounds at the end of the game, he may not have had a ride back to San Diego.

BS call on Weddle. AZ holding Barnes all night. I hated the AZ game announcers - bozos at best.

You'll see a few lineman on both sides of the ball get the ax on Monday. Hope AJ is watching the ILB market closely.

I am not that worried about the D.

Garay was out, our LB corps is still being toyed with. Now if the suck against the run like that week one.... offfdah!

Not a bad offering Buck... but all in all a bit too negative for my tastes. I was happy that we put in the effort to win despite it only being a preseason game. It helps to get the slow start monkey dealt with. Ultimately I think the lockout will have helped us in forcing many other teams down to our slow start level. Great call by Norv on that last play. Many cretins only give him credit if he wins two consecutive challenges... (or something equally obvious). You are correct about the last look. We are going to have the painful luxury have having to cut loose some good football players. Again... a testament to the Chargers' management.

Right... Wrong... Right. Luiget did get the penetration to force the TD fumble recovery... but on the other hand he was deked out of his jock on their reverse TD. Even Steven. btw... Gamble is NOT going to get cut.

All correct especially the last bit. Those Bozos didn't have a fargin' clue. On one play they called Gilchrist "that guy" and "very slow". The are probably very challenged to keep track of their own players.

A.J. watches everything very closely... dating way back to his time with the Bills. I don't think we are as bad off at ILB as most think. They just have to gel as an unit. Cooper is a waste of space and counter productive in this regard.

    You must be a n00b.

    1. Crayton is injury insurance against Floyd. Floyd does get injured. :D

    2. Crayton's age will prohibit you getting much for him in a trade.

1st team defense worried me last night but we were playing pretty damn vanilla with little to no blitzing and lots of zone. Plus we were missing Garay, Shaun Philips, English and LaBoy - just having Garay and SP in there would have made a noticeable difference I think. I'm sure the coaches were doing something specific and getting certain things on film to make evals, but I still hate watching our boys get pushed around so easily.

1st team running game is my biggest concern. Although the AZ dline had at least one guy lining up offsides several times w/out it being called by officials so maybe that had something to do with it, but I really really doubt it. (Still irritating, ******* zebra bastards) Tolbert is clearly the most effective/reliable runner we have right now but I would like to see the oline give our horses some room to run. That 40yd scamper by RM made me a very happy fan - I want more ktxbai.

ST looked solid again - I'm still gonna hold my breath every time we punt or kick off tho - at least until midway thru the season.

The WR competition is crazy - Walters is making it hard to cut him, as Hank said on the post game last night "the kid just makes plays". I really hope he gets a shot here b/c I doubt he'll make it thru waivers to the PS.

This next cut to 80 will be easy but the following cut is going to be very interesting to see play out.

Don't be stupid, we just spent a 3rd round pick on Brown and Norv has a man crush on him. We're not going to cut him after 3 weeks just because he got nicked a couple days into camp. You'll see a lot more of Brown next week.
If anyone is getting cut its Ajirotutu, and I don't think thats happening either.

There are those who whine endlessly that we wasted a 4th round pick on a hick from a backwater Canadian university... and others who are willing not to look closely and kiss a 3rd round pick goodbye without the slightest reservation.

Not only is this stupid... it is the land of stupid.

Just watched the game. Gamble will make the team as should Walters. I feel for Goodman because he has impressed on STs. Can he make the PS?, he might be swiped off it though. Some of those backup O linemen are downright awful. The LT, Eckerson was it?. Hopeless, totally out of his depth as is Thran who was playing RG. Notice how Baxter played LG last nite, looks like he will be on the PS. Coop is history, no way does he get kept now, he looked real slow and with the right arm not 100% unfortunately he can forget it.

Like many have mentioned the run blocking (& Mathews not 2 handing the ball) really concerns me. This team is built to pass period. We have a decent bunch of pass blockers and so so many weapons that you'd wonder could we just pass the whole freaking time!.

Vasquez will be the RG, Green did not look good last nite. Thought Mouton looked physical in the short shot he got.

I just finish watching the game on dvr. Man, Gamble and Walters make the team or there will be hell to pay. Also, preseason chit chat by the commentators is horrible. They need to work on their games as well, especially stop trying to convince me some 3rd string scrub is great every 5 seconds. Coop is completely useless, way to just stand there all broken and bandaged up there as a dude scores on you or runs right past you. I'm so glad we kept Volek. We really need to TRY to run more, please? I know PR is the ******* KING OF AWESOME but please, just a little? Mathews needs to go to the Tiki Barber school of STOP FUMBLING SO GODDAMN MUCH, but at least he doesn't wait until he's on the goal line to do it, right Mike Tolbert? Also I hate Nate so much I FF anytime he's on the field.

Didn't read much of this thread but i'll throw a few things out there:

-Run blocking sucked again, they basically opened up 1 hole and mathews tip toed for 48.

-Ryan Mathews is runnin timid. I am sorry to all the guys that are super high on him, but watch almost ANY other starting RB in the league hit the holes and you'll see what I am saying. God damn I wish AJ would have gotten Michael Bush when he had the chance. Something is very wrong with RM and I am not sure what it is..but it isn't good. For those that TRY to tell me anything about that long run, get a grip, I could have gotten 35+ on that play, nobody was even NEAR him until about 25 yards after the LOS. Oh, and the fumble was just icing on the cake.

-Walters is a little stud, he's almost assured a spot.

-Still like Goodman as well, I think Kelley Washington gets the axe because of him

-Todman in developing nicely, I don't think he will be quite the player Sproles was for us, but in time he's going to be damn close.

-Glad I got VJ in my FF draft Sat night =P

-Corey f'n Liuget, WOW man. AJ hit gold with this kid. Seriously, the motor is non stop, his hands are violent and relentless and he's just so damn fast for 300lbs it amazes me.. This kid is going to do big things for us for years to come.

-Butler has a lot to learn, he's basically getting tossed out with the Wolves but he's gotta get it going..

    -Gamble >> Larry English.

-VM continuing his great pre season. Lets HOPE they bench Castillo and put the 3 best players on the field.

-Weddle showing that he's game to stick his nose out there and lay some wood

-Cason got schooled all night, but in all fairness LF is the best WR in the game.

-Mouton is a damn hammer, excited to see him develop.

Overall I was pretty unimpressed with the starters, but hey, it happens. It was pretty cool to see the 2's drive the field and put one in the ez for the game.. Still have a lot of q's about our D, I know Manusky is gonna crank it way up come Sep 11, but our LBs will be under close watch.

A good offering 909... I'll respond to a few points.

I like our OL starters... just have a few reservations about Hardwick sometimes. He plays a bit too small in the run game. All is a work in progress. Dumbrowski is never going to be a star.

Most players... (Vaughn Martin is the classic example)... start producing as of year three. Running backs are somehow expected to be great out of the gate. Although I will not disagree with your Ryan Mathews take... for me it is too soon to make any realistic projections.

(ditto on your Gamble > English claim btw...)

Like your comments about Moution, Luiget, Todman and Castillo. I would find it difficult to label someone of Walters' demeanor a "stud". But he does have a good eye for the ball and looks sure handed.

^^ wow lol I've never seen someone do that before...Been playing FF for years and maybe 2-3 players on a specific team max.. Other than Mathews/Floyd I think it will work out pretty good for you

    I ended up with:

Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte, Reggie Bush, Tolbet

    Matt Schaub, Gay Cutler

VJ, DeSean Jackson, Ocho Cinco, Plax, Julio Jones

    Jason Witten, Zach Miller

    Bolt D

    Vinataeri

mine is a PPR (10 man) league. Definitely got high hopes

It was an "auto-draft". I was pretty amused at the result. RB is a concern. Hoping that Mathews is good. We all would not have a problem with that.

Don't get where you came to that conclusion. Is this based on his play, or some preconceptions of yours?

I re-watched his snaps, and he's clearly the best NT we had in that game. He's no Garay, but he's way ahead of Nwagbuo. Cam got penetration on a few plays and ran down a number from behind that weren't in his area. The guy is athletic and shows a good motor. The one play where Liuget tackled the RB for a loss, it was Cam's break through the middle that forced him into Liuget's arms. Thomas also got a hit on the QB on an overthrow to Fitzgerald. He got double teamed a fair amount, which is more than the others required.

Manusky was trying out a bunch of different line combos...... I saw Castillo in the middle a couple times, Martin, and Liuget as well. If I had to say one D-line player was a disappointment in that game, it was Nwagbou. I find it hard to believe that we survived with him in the middle a couple years ago.... he doesn't look like a viable backup NT right now.

All I can say is something isn't right with Oggie for the past two games.... Don't know if he is playing through being nicked badly or what - but he hasn't looked like he had the same "enthusiasm" in this camp. Cam Thomas is still playing until the whistle stops like Oggie used to do - but isn't showing this year. Something definitely isn't right in Oggieville and I sure hope it gets better come Thursday night because he is definitely on my "bubble" list. :(

Living in the middle of ACC land, I saw plenty of Cam Thomas, on TV & in person. He has the size & ability to be proficient - no wow factor - but he doesn't have the drive. He'll flash for a play here & there, but he doesn't sustain that level. Very suspect commitment is what I've seen for the past few years.

I honestly think Nwagbuo could get bumped. Let's see .... Liuget, Garay, Castillo, Cesaire, Martin, Thomas .... I guess Oggie does make it. Did I miss anyone?

I haven't seen that lack of effort since he got here. Thomas looked motivated on the field in Arizona. Are you suggesting that a guy can't improve from his college habits?

I'm not suggesting anything. What I'm saying is that Thomas flashed a good game in whatever college all-star game it was he played in - North/South? I forget now - & got drafted. He rode the back of a good UNC defense for a few years, particularly good play by teammate Marvin Austin.

Can he change his habits? Certainly - I just don't think that he will. Saying that he's the next best NT on the team behind Garay isn't saying that much. Oggie gives a lot of effort but he'll never be more than a marginally adequate backup. Martin would be a better choice but he's beginning to shine at the DE spot.

Do you see em only going with 6 on D line Buck?. I guess if they go with 7 OG is probably that 7th player. The huge lad Bryant gets some push but he is only ever going 1 direction i.e. north/south, he is no athlete it would appear.

Jamal wasn't a Pro Bowler in his second year either...... Heck, we didn't convert to the 3-4 until 2004, well into his career. It takes time to develop NTs...... I wouldn't pass judgment on Cam Thomas just yet. The guy is strong, athletic, and has the size to play the position. With some coaching, he may develop into a very good NT in time.

I hope he does. I never want to see a current Charger player fail. It's simply going to take a lot to sway my opinion, which is based on more viewing than just his time in San Diego.
