Depends, if the Spanos family is the only thing keeping the Chargers from being sold to Anschutz (not sure if that's the guy's name, completely blanking ATM) and moving to LA, then they're not expendable to me.
I hadn't. I'm slightly out of the loop here in Flensburg when it comes to local Southern California business news. :-(
I remember circling this game and the Pitt game before the season and hoping we'd win. I never thought it come in a season like this. Good game for Reyes, Horrible season for the Chargers & Jets
Chargers also won both games played on the East coast this season. Next year, they'll have 2 : Philly, Washington and possibly 2 in the Southeast Jacksonville and Miami.
Any other year, we win in both Pittsburgh and NY it's a cause for celebration and an assurance we are going to playoffs. This year it's meaningless
UTKevinAcee @UTKevinAcee "Chargers win in Pittsburgh & New York in December? They're headed to the playoffs, for sure." -- virtually everyone prior to season.
Second guess: A.J. Smith’s neglect of the offensive line is not a new subject. But it grows in significance. In the second quarter, CBS broadcasters Marv Albert and Rich Gannon quoted Turner saying that of the team’s 18 offensive linemen employed in the last three years, perhaps five were capable of being starters in the NFL. Turner knows he will be fired after the season. Of late, he seems to have been more candid about the talent he’s been given in recent seasons.
Though turner will take the fall, it's a fools game to blame him unconditionally. AJ played a big part in this mess and wasting Tomlinsons career with no championship as he promised. Turner will land somewhere and turn his new offense into a scoring machine and the Bolt's will be stuck in the mud.
Is this news to anyone? McNeil, Hardwick, Dielman, Vazquez and Gaither are the only guys we've put out there who anyone would reasonably expect to be a starter going into an NFL season.
A big part sure. But some of this is sour grapes on the part of Norv. Last I checked he's the one making the hires for assistants (that's not in AJ's job description). Hal Hunter and Mike Sullivan can't coach their way out of a paper bag, and sure as hell don't preach any sort of regimen of proper technique if the play of guys like Clary (his is abysmal), Vasquez (still has many of the same technical flaws he came into the league with), and Green is an indicator. I think part of the issue is that Norv really isn't that well respected in the coaching community. As a coordinator sure, but he doesn't have the sway or connections to bring in outsiders that could have a positive impact. It is possible to construct a quality OL without even having to use a single 1st round pick - particularly when it comes to the right tackle position and guard spots. Should AJ have given him more to work with? Absolutely. Would our staff have done much to improve guys that were provided - even if they were selected with premium picks - unless they came in with refined technique to begin with (certain college programs you can count on this from - Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Alabama)? Not likely.
