Maddux, the 333-game winner, will be 41 in April. He joins Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Clay Hensley and Tim Stauffer in a Padres rotation that lost Woody Williams and David Wells to free agency. Wells, meantime, ended his season with the Padres seemingly intent on retiring. However, he's already gotten a call from former Padres manager Bruce Bochy, who would like Wells to join him in San Francisco, and those close to Wells aren't counting out one more season. Wells will be 44 in May.
Fianally something is going the Padres way in the Winter Meetings. Maddux can teach Peavy and Young how to dominate as pitchers. Now we need to get power with the bat. Great find there Loren.
wasn't a lunatic spending and while we still need a power bat 1. Peavy 2. Young 3. Hensley 4. Maddux 5. Thompson/Stauffer/Wells Can we say BEST FULL ROTATION IN THE NL!
Batters are going to start to fear the rotation as the season progresses. If The Padres can get just one good power bat then we would be set.
Are you kidding me? Your not serious are you? The best rotation in the NL? Now thats a laugher. Peavy was below average last year. He did pick it up at the end. Maddux isnt guarenteed to repeat his performance from last year. This is one of those..lets see at the all star break kinda things. No matter how good our pitching is, we still need some kind of offense, the type that was needed in the playoffs. We have no sticks on this team. Besides Cameron and Giles, our offense isnt scary. Its not even mediocure. We will be last in offense.
One power bat wont help, whoever it is will lead this team in intentional walks. We dont have anyone to protect.
I agree 100% How about a power bat and a batter that can put the ball into play type of hitter. That is what the Padres ball park is made for. It is made for balls being put into play type of park.
he's making money with bbq sauce on the other hand Bruce Hurst, greg harris, mark davis and sterling hitchCOCK all have lots of time on their hands
I agree we need offense but we can say the following Maddux - Steady as a rock, still a very tough pitcher to beat Peavy - had a down year, should be dominating Young - the new young gun with the team Hensely - will only get better PLUS wells - will still get it done Who in the NL has a better rotation? That's better then teh Cardinals, better then the freakin Giants and Dodgers, better then the Mets (who have a very weak back end of the rotation), better then the braves and the cubs.
Ima call it now...its going to be a long offseason..the padres are going to suck. From first to worst.
To a certain extent I agree. All we need now is to get some bats and that will help us agian in the season. We have Jose Cruz Jr. now that should be something there. I agree we need bats oh so very much.
This just in, Randy Jones and the Padres have agreed on a 3 year deal in pricipal. Details to be released..... Ok, just kidding. :icon_rofl:
Im so glade we signed a 40yr old pitcher who takes up 1/3 of our offseason budget. Padres brass are ****in morons. Heres what I'd have done. Not neccessarily all connected, just different Ideas. 1. SIGN ROBERTS LONG TERMMy favorite Padre 2. Trade Todd Walker(NOT BARFIELD) 3. Trade Brian Giles/Linebrink for Manny Ramirez if we didnt sign anyone like Soriano or Zito. 4. Sign A.Soriano or Ramirez, if we want a damn power hitter so bad. 5. let G.Blum go, the guy should wear a dress at the plate. 6. Sign Gil Meche, I really like this guy.
I would of done this... 1. Put a championship team on the field as they said they would of when they got their own stadium. Signing a bunch of scrubs isnt going to do much for San Diego.
His 15 wins last year woulda lead the staff. He's a great addition to this team's staff, and Jake, CY, and Hensly are gonna flourish with Madduux around. I think AGonz is gonna really come into his own as a leader of this team onna day to day basis, and Kouzmanoff could surprise alotta folks. Y'all're dreamin if y'all thot the Pads'd pony up for Ramirez or even JD Drew I'm gonna pull this post out sometime durin the season and call you, out, Dude. Jes my .02.
At this point in time, thats my prediction. Of course, they might surprise everyone and sign a bat. But your not gunna win alot of games with this lineup 1b AGON 2b Todd Walker? 3b Kouz SS KG C Bard? LF ??? CRUZ? CF Cameron RF Giles Does this look like a championship ball club? I think this team is patch work, except the pitching of course. I will make another prediction before the start of the season..but if we go into the season with this lineup, I will personally pull this post back up and be the first to tell you "I told you so".

Heres what our lineup would have looked like if I was in control. 1. Roberts (MVP!!!) LF 2. Barfield 2B 3. Gonzalez 1B 4. Ramirez 3B(Sign him and drop Giles and/or Walker all together) 5. Bard C 6. Cameron CF 7. Green SS 8. Johnson or Branyan RF Also we'd sign Bochy and Gil Meche to our rotation with the extra money from trading or cutting Giles.
Totally agree with the giles thing. Dont think he is worth what we signed him for. I would of went after ramirez. I think he's solid. Also, I would of bargained for a catcher as well. Bard is ave, not a starter though. Bowen, are you kidding me.
