Projecting the Chargers roster, Take Four

This will not be the roster for the season opener against the Houston Texans. That much we know.

What follows is a projection by UT Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken and columnist Kevin Acee of the 53-man roster after final cuts are made Aug. 31. But the Chargers will undoubtedly be active (extremely so) in the weeks after those cuts, trawling the waiver wire for veteran help.

This fourth stab at a roster is based on what Gehlken and Acee have seen and heard, and the significant movement this week is at running back, offensive line and receiver.

    Quarterbacks

    Philip Rivers

    Charlie Whitehurst

Brad Sorensen: A 118.4 passer rating, can move. Excellent project.

    Running backs

Ryan Mathews: Averaging 5.3 yards on his 12 carries.

    Danny Woodhead

    Ronnie Brown

Fozzy Whittaker: Is he going to take Brown’s job? Or might the Chargers keep five backs?

    Le’Ron McClain

    Offensive line

    D.J. Fluker

    Jeromey Clary

    Nick Hardwick

    Chad Rinehart

    King Dunlap

    Max Starks

    David Molk

Rich Ohrnberger: Displaces Johnnie Troutman, who after a year of rehab does not look comfortable.

    Tight end

    Antonio Gates

    John Phillips

    Ladarius Green

    Receiver

    Malcom Floyd

    Vincent Brown

    Keenan Allen

    Eddie Royal

Robert Meachem: Back because he has to be. Needs to make more plays like he did in end zone Saturday to be a factor.

Mike Willie: Kid is tough, provides sizable target and is making most of opportunity.

    Defensive line

    Corey Liuget

    Cam Thomas

    Kendall Reyes

Kwame Geathers: Big rookie can stop the run. Exceptional in that capacity on Thursday.

    Jarius Wynn

    Damik Scafe

    Outside linebacker

    Dwight Freeney

    Jarret Johnson

    Larry English

    Tourek Williams

    Frank Beltre

    Inside linebacker

    Donald Butler

    Manti Te’o

    D.J. Smith

    Bront Bird

    Andrew Gachkar

    Cornerback

    Derek Cox

    Shareece Wright

    Johnny Patrick

Steve Williams: Chargers unlikely to risk losing him via waivers, meaning he make roster out of preseason before going on IR.

    Safety

    Eric Weddle

    Brandon Taylor

Marcus Gilchrist: Team almost certainly adds a corner after Aug. 31, but Gilchrist’s versatility helps thin group.

    Jahleel Addae

    Darrell Stuckey

    Placekicker

    Nick Novak

    Punter

    Mike Scifres

    Long snapper

    Mike Windt

    Fighting chance

    Seyi Ajirotutu (WR)

    Marcus Cromartie (CB)

    Greg Gatson (CB)

Richard Goodman (WR): Has to be stellar on special teams, and he hasn’t been.

Chris Gronkowski (FB): If he can’t get on the field (foot) and make a better mark on these kick teams, he shouldn’t be on any roster.

    Michael Hill (RB)

    Thomas Keiser (OLB)

Brandon Moore (DE): Another game like Thursday, he could push Wynn off roster.

    Steve Schilling (G)

    Johnnie Troutman (G)

I think Gatson and Baker will be casualties of another teams CB dump and also a return specialist is needed. I don't want to see a guy like Weddle, Royal (if he's going to be featured in the offense much more) or Woodhead with that responsibility.

Having said that, I would like to see Cromartie try out, that kid showed some wheels chasing down that RB in Chicago when he had a huge return.

    - Deon Butler can play a similar role to Eddie Royal and he has done it in the NFL before with Seattle.
    - Greg Gatson is a quick corner, can play a similar role to Steve Williams. Can also contribute on coverage in ST's. I don't know how this team looks so bad in preseason. Maybe were mixing it up too much, but guys like Gachkar, Bird, Stuckey, Gatson, etc. could contribute very well on ST's.
    - William Middleton has to make this team now, he has NFL experience and also is there for depth because we can't have too much inexperience on this roster if were looking to compete.

Our Practice Squad would look good as well. Let guys like Edwin Baker, Mike Willie, Johnnie Troutman get more reps in at practice and also be there for injury.

I still think we will sign a vet somewhere on this team, most likely on the defensive side. Should take a look at Casey Hampton, Maake Kemoeatu, or Sione Pouha on a 1 year deal. Then look at secondary help in the free agency market now or wait until some players are cut/waiver line.

Stupid question, I'm noticing a substantial amount of cuts happening today, Is today the first day of roster trimming?

Cool, thanks. I didn't think it was today but once I started seeing a handful of guys get released, I thought they may have changed it or something.

Seems like a stupid idea to move to a new scheme...and then start paying players big before you even get to see them in the new scheme.

There is no guarantee Lee will succeed playing deep in coverage in Monte Kiffen's Tampa 2.

Yeah that should be interesting lol

But James Laurinaitis signed the same exact deal as Sean Lee's. So, I expect Donald Butler to get the same or very close.
