They also signed former Padre SS Khalil Greene. Good luck. 01/09/10 11:40 PM EST Rangers reel in Greene for utility role Veteran agrees to one-year deal to supplant Vizquel By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com ARLINGTON -- The Rangers, staying busy this weekend, have reached an agreement with free agent shortstop Khalil Greene, sources said on Saturday night. The deal is pending a physical, but Greene has agreed to a one-year, $750,000 contract to be the Rangers' utility infielder. He replaces Omar Vizquel, who filled that role last year but signed early in the offseason with the White Sox. The Rangers' main concern was finding a utility infielder who can play shortstop, and Greene more than satisfies that goal. He has had some personal issues to deal with over the past few years but was a front-line shortstop for the Padres for several years. His best season was in 2007, when he hit .254 with 27 home runs and 97 RBIs in 153 games and 659 at-bats for the Padres. He was traded to the Cardinals after the 2008 season, and he spent last year in St. Louis as a utility infielder, hitting .200 with six home runs and 24 RBIs in 77 games and 193 at-bats. He started 26 games at shortstop and 13 games at third base. It's the first time in his Major League career that he has played third base. T.R. Sullivan is a reporter for MLB.com.
