Florida Lottery Winner Opens Nude Dude Ranch

    Saturday, April 18, 2009

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — You've heard of nude beaches, but how about a nude dude ranch?

A multi-million-dollar lottery winner in Florida is riling some by opening up his own. Tim Clements hit a $3.3 million jackpot in 2004, and wanted to return to the farm life he grew up in.

He and David Jennings, co-owner of the ranch, say the farm is secluded enough to be in the buff.

But they have two big problems — local zoning laws and a nudity ban in Hernando County.

Clements says they'll try to get the necessary paperwork, but if they can't get approval he'll close the CJ Ranch again to all but friends.

Though their Web site says clothing is optional, there is a caveat: Everyone "must wear pants and boots to ride the horses."

This weekend myself and my two boys went up to Camp Emerson in Idyllwild for camperee. I am an Assistant Scout Master in the Boys troop so I get to go camping and enjoy seeing the boys grow and learn things.

Part of Camperee is the boys have to set up their own camp, decorate it with scouting ‘gadgits’ like Lashed together gates, or flag poles, stuff they make. They have to plan their own menus cook, clean etc. They are in charge of themselves and we ‘Adults’ are there if there is a problem, otherwise we get to sit back and watch (we also get to sneak samples of what they cook, which at times is nice…)

Well part of Scouting is OA, the Order of the Arrow. It is an honor scout group, where the scouts themselves vote the ‘best’ scouts into, it has been around since the 1920’s and there is a definite honor to being part of this group.

Well my oldest son (14) was of the age and rank to be eligible, and has not been ‘tapped out’ (the method of picking the elected scouts out during a ceremony) the last two years. But he has shown a lot of growth and maturity over the last year and the other scouts saw it to because he was tapped out. I was extremely proud at that moment and could see that he was standing straighter, but resisting the urge to deliver a cheesy smile which is often times plastered on his face.

Well one of the adult members of the OA grabbed me and pushed me behind my son. So I figure it is so I can congratulate him. But they took my son away and there I stood looking at a young man decked out like an American Indian in leathers and huge Indian head dress. He is giving me a look like ‘well’, and I am positive I was returning the same look.

I got pushed again and resisted the urge to deliver an elbow to the adult pushing me, and the young man pointed me in the same direction as my son.

I was tapped out for an adult member of the Order of the Arrow on the same night as my son. The honor of being tapped out is one thing, but to share it with my son is something totally different. It is something I am not sure I can put into words. Though after giving my son a big congratulatory hug he explained his perception as he said “I didn’t know they allowed Adults in this, they must have really dropped their standards for you!

I think he knew he was safe from the sever drumming such a jest would normally call down upon himself (I write this only in jest, do not call Child Protective Services…).

In all 10 young men and 2 adults got tapped out from our Troop, of which I was surprised to be one. Because though I have been helping with the troop for over 2 years, I have been an Assistant Scout master for less than 6 months. But being given the honor to have this happen, with my son and 9 other young men I have come to admire and respect is something I doubt I can ever put word to the plethora (yes I DO know what a plethora is) feelings I have.

So thanks for letting me ramble on, not that you really had any ability to stop me from pressing send, but it helps to write things out like this from time to time…

when we vigiled we slept out on top on Lions Head, the big rock that sticks way out into the seas at Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island.

My son just turned 11 and I've been debating if I want him to try Boy Scouts when we move over the summer (been in cub scouts last 2 years). I think you guys have helped convince me yes. I need to get ahold of his new district and see if any of the SMs have any experience with autistic kids. I act as his 1 on 1 aid, but having an understanding leader helps alot.

Go for it. Just communicate the issues with your son's leaders and be there to help.

Most issues come when parents want the BSA to simply be baby sitters.

    It’s just not in Scouting.

Heck I get all the time with sports, parents who drop the kids off for a practice and or a game. Then someone has to stay with them until the parents come back to pick them up.

Because I will never leave any kid unattended at any facility while I am there.

I worked outside in the yard all effen day with one of my best friends, Brian. We prepped my deck for staining. OMG, it's going to be the party deck when we complete the project, this weekend.

I'm a true "red neck" after working in the yard all day... Oh, and it's absolutely beautiful in Utah these days...

Gotta say that I have been really impressed with the leaders here. My son is in the same cub scout troop I was as a kid  when I first met the Scout Master and explained the situation for him and how I was worried about my son being a distraction, his only response was "that just makes us that much more diverse". I could have kissed him, but the we wouldn't have got to join so I restrained myself:lol:
