God help me, I don't think I know/remember where Scripps Pier is. I know about the pier at OB; I'd surf there and by the jetty. My personal fave was Tourmalane or Windnsea, and K-38 1/2 down south.
My first time going to a beach was at Lajolla Shores. I walked out the water was crystal clear, no sea weed. Being a snot nosd kid from Utah I half expected to be eaten by a shark at any moment. When i got up to about my waist O relaxed and decided 'no problems'. Next step a skate about the size of a large dinner plate popped out under my foot right before I stepped on it. Scared the bejesus out of me. I flipped around and walked back to shore. My brother asked 'arent you going to go swimming?' I said 'nope, waters too cold.' I was a land lubbin sissy. Now I go out and look for big things in the water. Saw dolphins off of tory pines.
Ever get stung by a jellyfish? That hurts like few things hurt. I was 10, maybe 11 yrs. old, romping around in the surf at OB, when a wave swept something that looked like a clear plastic bag smack up against the calf of my right leg. WHAM! It felt like someone had just buried a red-hot iron in it. I let out a high "C" and both my grandmother and the lifeguard---whom I remember as looking something like Erik Estrada in his heyday---came running. Gawd, how that burned............good thing it was a baby jellyfish and not one of those man-o-wars that we saw frequently from the pier. That was definitely an experience I never wanted to repeat..........but yanno, I've been in the water a hundred times since then, and I haven't encountered another jellyfish. Lucky, I guess.
La Jolla Shores was one of the best spots to go Skim Boarding. We would take a piece of plywood and cut it into a 24 inch Circle, paint it up, and throw it and jump on it, and ride the water in between the waves that went up on the beach. Those dry spots sucked big time.
The north Atlantic off the coast of Maine didn't hold the kinds of dangers to beach goers the Pacific does. The worst part of that part of the country was the freakin' cold water...we also had horseshoe crabs at some beaches. They were HUGE, looked like prehistoric tanks and have about a nine inch spiny tail. I had always heard people could get badly hurt stepping on that tail, but I never heard of anyone who had. We had no red jellyfish, but there were tons of white jellyfish. They were clear and about as big around as a small pancake. They didn't sting, and they provided great ammunition for beach wars....getting splatted with a white jellyfish wasn't exactly a pleasant experience...been in Cali since 1998...have never gone in the water, and I don't ever plan to. Beaches are fun to walk and hang out, and the sea is lovely to look at, but playing in water was never much of a fav for me.
I was outside at Windnsea one day, jes waitin' for the next set to come in. I was sitting on my board with a stick of parafin that I was gonna use to re-wax when I felt a bump on the bottom of my board. All sorts of bad thoughts went thru my head (thank God this was before the movie Jaws), and I got real scared, when all of a sudden, a harbor seal stuck his head outta the water, looked at me and split. I headed in to call it quits for the day!! :icon_eek:
I used to love sitting on my board at Torrey Pines and watch the Dolphins swimming in the waves. Windnsea was my favorite for body surfing. Law St. for :icon_party:
Onea the last jobs I had before I ran away from home to join the Army was at Taco Bell at Midway, across from Midway Drive-In. It was the first TB in SD, and it opened in spring of '67.
I was rubbed by a Dolphin, scared the holey beegeebies out of me, I caught the very next wave, and there was that Dolphin, inside the wave.
I've heard of dolphins and porpoises doing that, but never experinced it. That'd scare the **** outtame, as well!! :icon_eek:
Takes me back. I was sitting on my board on the north side of Scripps pier, when out of the corner of my eye I saw two fins surface and dive about 10' away. Let's just say that the water got a little warmer. After paddling in with what I remember to be Mark Spitz-esque grace I noticed this guy laughing his *** off as the two dolphins continued north.
I was body surfing at Blacks beach in about 10 to 15 foot waves and I was rubbed on my leg by a shark. I knew it was a shark because I was a deck hand on Seaforth boats at the time. The water was very murky due to the surf size and I couldn't see the actual shark but I knew the feel of the skin and I had abrasions on my leg. I estimate the shark size at 6 to 7 feet long. I exited very quickly and waved to my friends to do the same.
I was so scared I dont remember If I added to the water level or not, but I know nothing was floating
Yes, and they have a very NICE Campus. I called a couple of Baseball games up there, the field is one of the best in San Diego County.

:icon_rofl: Slightly off-topic, but in 1964 the Navy's message announcing the "Out of bounds" areas in San Diego was fondly referred to by me and my shipmates as "The liberty list".
