Cam Thomas chose #76, hopefully he lives up to that!

    Other players of interest...

    Donald Butler #51
    Jonathan Crompton #8
    Sey Ajirotoutou #89
    Jeremy Williams #82
Darrell Stuckey #36 (Brandon Hughes also has this #)
    Shawnebrey McNeil #40
    Brandon Lang #57
    Dedrick Epps #87

Ryan Mathews number is still unconfirmed, I think he might be trying to buy a number from someone.

He could take 33 now and change later on when someone like Daunte Hughes gets cut after camp.

It was in response to a suggestion that Donk fans would even consider letting Tebow(sp) wear the #7. I was just pointing out that #7 won a couple Lombardi's and that would be understandable. Whereas, Lt bearly played in a playoff game let alone sniffed the Super Bowl. I most certainly hope this has cleared the air for you. Sometimes it is wise to look before you leap! :icon_eek::icon_shrug:

He is Blue/Gold as far as I'm concerned. It would be great if he accomplished those numbers you posted.

It was clear, I just still don't get why one hall of famer is more deserving of a retired number than another (future) hall of famer just because he was on a better overall team and didn't have the bad luck to get injured come playoff time.

Should we take down those #14 and #19 banners? Neither of them ever sniffed the Super Bowl for the Chargers.

But both are in the HOF as 2 of the greatest players. Super Bowl or not. There is NO reason to take down their numbers.

And LT will be in the HOF as well as one fo the greatest players, Super Bowl or not, so there's no need to hand his number to the next guy who comes along.

    Is 21 retired? No.
Is it in use by another current Charger? No.

IMO, until it's retired, it's open for use. The player who takes the number is taking the chance of having to live up to the fans' expectations.

Like Cam Thomas taking 76. :icon_eek:

As great as Jamal was he hardly compares to LT.

Did the Padres let anyone wear 19 between Tony's retirement and 9/4/04? (The day they officially retired it)

For ryans own sake he should just get his own number and be ryan matthews.

Maybe in a couple of years someone else can wear #21. Though I doubt it will happen. The fans will want it retired. Its just what fans do.

Ryan already picked #33 a long time ago.

Any ongoing conversation on this subject is centered around hypothetical scenarios.

I agree. I never said Mathews should get #21, but would not really care if he got it. LT didn't retire, he moved on to another team.

Kind of like Montana leaving SF for 2 years going to KC. I don't think anyone has ever worn #16 for the 49ers since.

    #33 wouldn't look bad, what about #40???

It seems so long ago when we had Gary Anderson leaping into the endzone...

I haven't seen anyone wear that jersey number and do it proud.

    I'm just sayin'...

For those of you who are like Gary who???

Here's a YouTube Video of him....

What about #26? Last time someone played in that jersey that was memorable was Lionel "Little Train" James...

    Go Chargers!!!

I'm sure I'll end up buying whatever jersey number Matthews decides for the regular season...

You said it yourself, first off he is not a hall of famer yet. Secondly, unless I'm wrong, he didn't retire from the Chargers he just changed teams. In other words, he's still an active player. Until he's done and hangs them up, he is not worthy of the recognition quite yet.

One day it will happen and Mathews is showing a great deal of respect for LT and I give him all the credit in the world. Lt left while taking some parting shot's, let's let it die down and heal. LT will get he due when it's time, not before then.

Only because he hasn't retired yet and, therefore, isn't eligible for it.

Even the most casual NFL fan knows Tomlinson will be in the Hall of Fame his first year of eligibility.

Even inept fans understand that an active player doesn't have his jersey retired until he's done, or is dying from some horrible terminal disease, would then be cause for an exception.

And I don't think I said his jersey should be retired now. At least not officially.

The Chargers' official Twitter account says that first-round draft pick Ryan Mathews will wear No. 24. In high school and at Fresno State, Mathews wore No. 21 in honor of LaDainian Tomlinson, but he said he wouldn't take his idol's number with the Chargers.
