As we're already starting to see cuts made by teams and we approach the third preseason game, after which teams make the first sweeping cut to start paring down their rosters to a final 54, I figured it might benefit us to have a thread to serve as a watch list and discussion point for roster-bubble guys who could contribute and might stand a chance to get snatched up by Telescopo.

    For example:
If you recall, Johnson was the Grand Valley State WR prospect with near Julio Jones like advanced metrics I was gushing about going into the draft. I'd expect Willie to make the final roster, but if he (or Johnson) can be justified as returner options then Goodman's spot can just as easily be given to a player like Johnson who, worse came to worse, could be more easily passed to the practice squad when Floyd does return if he hasn't made a breakout that necessitates keeping him on the active roster.

May never be more than a depth option, but at this point we're practically hurting for depth options, so if he's able to contribute on ST's at all, he might be worth a shot as a reclamation project. It would be a matter of holding his potentially still untapped ceiling versus Keiser's already knowing the scheme/playbook. Given that Indy was switching to a 3-4 last year and Branch was viewed as one of the near-premier linebacker-convert pass-rushers in the class, it would be safe to assume Tommy T has some familiarity with him as far as scouting.

I'd bring in Branch easily; he's a speed rusher and I know he would do fantastic in a better scheme and the ability to use his speed

Weren't we supposedly interested in Tom Zibkowski a while back? Or am I thinking of someone else?

I wouldn't mind, picking up OG Jack Cornell who was released by the Ravens, he looked pretty good as a run blocker.

This is probably he first year where I can honestly say, we're good at the safety position (not set) but we have some guys who could be promising. Otherwise I would be all over Kenny Phillips

I'd give Streeter a shot, whats the worse that could happen, we cut him? 6'5" 220 WR's don't exactly grow on trees

Having said that, he's very raw and would probably have to sit on the PS for a year to develop but maybe we can makes Chicken S#$% into Salad

    Some more semi-interesting players...

    S Chris Hope
    OG/OT Mark Asper
    LB Aaron Curry
CB Corey Nelms (surprised Doug hasn't mentioned him yet)
    S Kenny Phillips

Phillips has yet to recover from his knee injury - and by recover I mean return to the speed he once had. He's now hobbled and slow. Aaron Curry just needs to go to the CFL. He was overdrafted despite being hyped as the ultimate "safe" prospect - maybe... maybe he can fit in a 3-4 as an ILB, but the guy just bombed out of two LB needy teams (Raiders and Giants). And Cribbs, unless he's offering us something as a WR, I'd just as soon take a flier on a younger returner-only option who isn't coming off an injury.

Ronnell Lewis got released by the Lions, wouldn't mind giving him a look as an OLB. I'd be fine with just swapping Goodman for Terrance Copper - because at least Cooper offers some minimal value as a WR in addition to being a special teams ace (mostly gunner, but I believe he is also capable of returning).

Chargers cuts have begun. Some players have been notified. Must be down to 75 Tuesday, then 53 on Saturday. Names to come.

The first 10 Chargers roster cuts are in. From the Chargers web site: (by position)
    RB Edwin Baker
    C Colin Baxter
    CB Greg Brown
    S Tony Burnett
    WR Deon Butler
    G Brandyn Dombrowski
    QB Nathan Enderle
    P Richard Kent
    DL Jamarcus McFarland
    TE Dallas Walker

Sorry, no Meachem or Whitehurst...stay tuned I guess.

Dombrowski isn't eligible for the practice squad. I doubt Baker will clear waivers to make it to PS.

I can't say that these were bad or terrible cuts, just part of the NFL. Someone had to be unemployed by the end of the week...

Are we even allowed to build the practice squad at this point? Or does that start after final cuts next week?

Any team to claim Baker would have to put him on their 53, I don't think that will happen.

^^^ I believe that you are correct about the practice squad. But in the meantime, the guys can replace the kicker's divots and re-sod the playing turf at the practice facility until their names get called in a week and a half...

That is a good question. I know the rules for practice squad eligibility but not when players can be signed to them. I would imagine it is after the final 53 man roster cut, but that is just my guess.

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, players must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster);
    • Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games;
    • If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.

No practice squad moves until the final cut down to 53 plus the 8 PS players. I don't expect must to happen in the front office with regards to acquiring other teams cast-offs until right after the final round of cuts. Then I expect the "fun" to start.

A team could sign Baker now right? provided they are down to the 75 on Tuesday. Of course that would mean he is going to their 53 else he'd have to clear waivers again for that new team.
