Upset official: Pitt knocks off VaTech Posted by Ben Kercheval on September 15, 2012, 3:56 PM EDT Of the two top 25 upsets brewing just a short while ago, only one of them came to fruition. No. 16 TCU survived a turnover-filled Big 12 debut to top Kansas 20-6. No. 13 Virginia Tech? Not so lucky against the might Pitt Panthers. Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas threw three interceptions as part of a four-turnover game for VaTech in a35-17 loss. Virginia Tech’s offense couldn’t run the ball, couldn’t convert third downs, and as a result, couldn’t get in any sort of rhythm. Not that VaTech’s defense, usually a salty group under Bud Foster, was much better. That group gave up 537 yards to Pitt and nearly allowed two 100-yard rushers. It was an all-around bad performance on the road. With the loss, No. 5 Florida State, which exorcised its Wake Forest Demons (so to speak) today, and No. 11 Clemson look like the ACC’s two best teams. There was a lot of hype surrounding Virginia Tech heading into the season — just as much hype was handed to Thomas — but the Hokies haven’t played like a top 25 team yet this season. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/15/upset-official-pitt-knocks-off-vatech/
