This game shows you how much Goodell has ruined the game of football. Defenses so neutered we get these ridiculous track meets.

What specifically has Goodell done to "neuter" defensive football. What specific plays in the game were defined by rule changes instituted by Goodell?

Did you see the NFL in the late 70's/early 80's? Were defenses being neutered back then? This game looked like a typical Chargers/Dolphins game from the early 80's. Nothing has changed. What we saw tonight was two really good QBs with really good offenses and some great special teams returners.

Please. Lombardi would not even have recognized that game played on field named after him.

These were the number 2 and number 7 defenses in the league last year playing against the number 10 and 11 offenses. Says right there where the balance in the league is.

Specific ways the defenses have been neutered.

    1. You can't hit anyone anymore. Defenseless receivers. Ridiculous concept. Receiver has a brain and a choice, do I jump for that ball and get hammered or not. Over the middle intimidation was a big part of the game and critical for a defense to be effective. Jack Tatum and Ronnie Lott must be damn glad they are not playing in this era.

    2. Any random contact anywhere nears someone's head is 15 yards. This is a fast game, shiat happens. Same for you can't hit anywhere near a QBs legs. Unintentional love taps should not be penalized.

    3. No contact after 5 yards. If the ball ain't in the air yet you should be able touch the receiver.

    4. Moving up the kickoffs to avoid kickoff returns to avoid injuries. Seriously? If you want to avoid injuries as your primary goal eliminate kickoffs altogether. Hell, get rid of the entire game actually. This will ensure no one ever gets hurt.

All these rules didn't exist in the late 70s when defenses were allowed to defend and were not neutered and they are slowly destroying the game.

The pussification of American football is in full swing. We are a year or two away from these guys starting to take dives like in soccer. Pro basketball is a snoozefest because they eliminated the ability to play defense that actually worked, the zone. When a Kyle Orton is routinely throwing over 4000 yards a season you know you have ruined the game as it was designed to played.

Good post Schweizer Bolt... but what's the rub on Kyle Orton? Besides being a Donk... (which was not his fault)... the man is a decent player. Probably better than Cuddles.

With the NE/Mia game I rest my case on how much Goodell has ruined this league. 500 yards by Brady is bad enough. But over 400 yards by that future hall of famer Chad Henne takes the cake. Over 900 yards of passing.

The balance is just way out right now. Make these receivers fight off the line like they use to.

That damn Goddell... he neutered Minnesotas passing game. It's a shame we have to see a game where Goddell neuters an offensive team that they can only throw for 39 yards.
