SAN DIEGO ---- No one would blame 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde if, after 18 NFL seasons, he just wanted to lounge around the house. No one would give him a sideways glance if he were looking for a broadcasting opportunity or devoting hours to his marketing company.

Instead, Testaverde has opted for a more familiar ---- yet more painful ---- way to spend his early 40s.

After mulling retirement and going unsigned three weeks into this season, the 1986 Heisman Trophy winner and first pick in the 1987 NFL Draft decided to throw himself back into the fire.</blockquote>
