AJ Smith is getting destroyed on NFL Network right now for letting a clear cut #1 WR walk.

    And he deserves it.

Exactly. I'm thinking his production will go down and he won't be among the top ten WR's in 2012. It would have been great if the Chargers could have retained VJ, but I'm glad they didn't blow big money to that end.

That would be a good pick up for sure. He IS a deep theat. He also has good hands. That catch in the Super Bowl was the key to the game.

I'd still debate that VJ's a clear-cut #1 (especially the clear-cut part since the man has never produced without Gates who is the spark that makes our offense got and opens things up SO MUCH for Jackson - certainly not something that Kellen Winslow's going to do for him), but we'd be here all day.

By the early reports I'm hearing VJ's deal with the Bucs is in the $12 million per year average... with all due respect to need, or whatever anyone may think of Vincent Jackson but **** that! That's Larry Fitzgerald money and Vincent Jackson hasn't done nearly enough to merit Fitzgerald's pay-grade.

Acee's turned snaky and is trying to do everything he can to campaign for a higher media job at this point (seriously, the couple of interview he's given today have been straight SCUM). Committing $12 million/yr to VJ would have taken us out of the market for Gaither unless Gaither found next to no market out there - which is unlikely the way teams are throwing around cap money space like it was Halloween candy. Is AJ and the front office to blame for ending up in this situation? Yes. Is he to blame for not grossly overpaying to keep a WR whose never fully demonstrated the ability to be a true #1 WR and creating other holes on his roster in the process? No. And Jeff Garcia's a fool if he actually believe the contrary.

I'll withhold judgement of this decision after I see what the contract VJ got is. If he gets more than $8-9mil/yr average, then I won't be upset as I can't justify over paying a WR

The bolded part I agree with........ but will we even get to keep Gaither? That's the question.

SO, AJ continues to do his Budda immitation. Just sitting there with a stupid smile on his face, sitting on his fat butt doing nothing. I notice a trend.

They better hope Meachem leave Buffalo without a contract. No way Robinson re-signs with the team that cut him.

You have proof of this how or where?

Sorry if it comes off as curt, I'm not normally one to go out of my way to defend AJ but the impatience of some folks and their jumping to Chicken Little status is, in a word, laughable.

We have only re-signed one of our own (meanwhile reports have already surfaced that other free agents we're talking to, our own or other folks', are wanting to test the market or have visits lined up that they're honoring) and evidently that declares 100% that our front office is doing absolutely nothing but sitting around playing tiddly winks.

    Get real!

I'm going off history. Other teams are making noise. We need to as well. Thats the point.
If you need some players, and really want to make a splash, you go for it. You see I'm a Tigers, and Wings fan, and Mike Illitch is a prime example. He wants to WIN. AJ never has made noise, nor seems to be serious about anything, when it comes to making moves.
Its my opinion built on his years of standing firm and doing little or nothing. Relying on the draft to build the team. That is not enough in this day and age. But hey, i'm just a frustrated fan. What do I know.

The Saints had similar money to the Chargers but they locked up a valuable target to that offense and the Chargers failed to..

Also with all the FA WR signings - coupled with the WR's they drafted last year - you have to expect that the Redskins are going to be releasing someone from their corps. If it's Santana Moss - that's not a bad stop-gap and someone who is already familiar with Norv's offense (IIRC, Moss was in his first - pre trade to the Jets before getting traded back - stint with the Skins when Norv was their HC).

    Yes an No..

We need that impact player on defense and that downgrade all of our plans throughout the draft. Nevermind locking the guy up for a few years and we'll have another VJ situation here

He likely won't sign for much less than VJ is going to get (and in Wallace's case, despite his size, his body of work almost makes a better case as a #1 than VJ's does), so I can't justify that contract AND a 1st. I'd sooner blow the 1st on Michael Floyd and re-establish our alcoholic quotient.

Their guy had a buttload more loyalty to his franchise and teammates. There's a big difference between Colston, who stated he didn't want to test the market AND gave a hometown discount, and Vincent Jackson, who was adamant about testing the market and was clearly all about the money.

very true wasn't aware that was Colston's hometown..

This deal between the Buc's is still not official.. I'm surprised a deal hasn't been reached yet. Maybe SD is holding talks with him as well.. Probably not though..

Hindsight. I don't remember too many folks 'round here crying when he was cut. In fact, I think some may have labeled him as "camp fodder", but I have neither the time nor inclination to look it up. :)

If we don't get Meachem or at the very least Reggie Wayne, AJ deserves ever bit of **** thrown at him.

It is unbelievable to me he wasn't on the phone immediately with both players setting up meetings.
