Volek back as backup QB The Chargers secured the services of Billy Volek for another two years. While they hope that service is limited to running the scout team in practice and handing off at the end of victories, his signing was considered crucial nonetheless. Volek, who has started 10 games in his eight-year career, has spent the past five seasons with the Chargers. The team doesn't want to have him as its starter, but it is uniquely comfortable with Volek if disaster were to strike Philip Rivers. That's why they gave him $6 million over two years with $2.5 million guaranteed in 2011. Volek, whose high point with the Chargers was his leading the winning touchdown drive at Indianapolis in the 2007 postseason after Rivers tore his ACL, has completed 28 of his 48 passes with the Chargers in 13 games (all Chargers victories). His career passer rating is 84.9. The Chargers never wanted to and never really had to engage in serious discussions with any other options.
